Mayor Launches Dunedin?s White Ribbon Campaign

Mayor Launches Dunedin?s White Ribbon Campaign

Dunedin (Monday, 5 November 2012) ? Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull has added his support to a national campaign to end men?s violence against women.

The 2012 White Ribbon Campaign was launched today throughout New Zealand and Mayor Cull has signed a pledge to never commit or condone or remain silent about violence towards women.

?I?m proud to take part in the White Ribbon Campaign,? Mr Cull says.

?Violence may start in the home, but it is a community problem. Our Council has always taken violence seriously and the White Ribbon Campaign is a chance to talk about the issues openly and honestly.

?Change needs to occur in every community across New Zealand which is why I am joining with my mayoral colleagues and signing the pledge to add my voice to this important campaign.?

Mr Cull?s signature, and those from other mayors around the country, will be displayed as part of a newspaper advertisement being run on international White Ribbon Day on 25 November. They will also be at www.whiteribbon.org.nz.

The White Ribbon Pledge is one of a number of initiatives organised by the Families Commission-led White Ribbon Campaign.

Chief Families Commissioner Carl Davidson says the commission wants this campaign to ?talk to people who are outside the tent.

?There are many passionate people throughout the country working to reduce violence, but we need to connect with the many good men that simply don?t believe this problem affects them.?

The Nation: Families involved in the Pike River Mine tragedy are organising their own experts to re-enter the mine.

Speaking on TV3?s ?The Nation? this weekend, their spokesperson, Bernie Monk, said the families? recommendations to the Royal Commission inquiry into the disaster had ?fallen on deaf ears?.

?We've tried all avenues. You know we've been back to the government several times on this, and of course they always say that their experts said it's too unsafe. Well that?s not quite the truth... So as from tomorrow, Sunday, we've got our experts coming in from the UK, and we're going to make this happen.? More>>
