Kyocera Rise (Virgin Mobile)

By Alex Colon

The Kyocera Rise ?is Virgin Mobile's first keyboarded smartphone to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). That, along with its $99.99 price tag and solid QWERTY keyboard, would make you think you're getting quite a deal. But Kyocera cuts enough corners?particularly on the lackluster display and poor camera?that the end result is merely average. The Kyocera Rise will work if you're a physical keyboard diehard, but if you're willing to give it up, you can do a lot better.

Virgin Differences and Conclusions
This is the same phone as the?Kyocera Rise we reviewed over on Sprint. It gains half a star here because Virgin doesn't have the same diverse collection of keyboarded smartphones to choose from that Sprint does.

For a closer look at the phone, read our review and check out the slideshow below. It's the same exact device, though it doesn't come preloaded with the Sprint Zone app (which is actually a good thing).

If you're looking for a keyboarded smartphone on Virgin, the pickings are slim. If you want a keyboard and Android 4.0, and can deal with the lackluster display, the Kyocera Rise should work for you. The LG Optimus Slider, our previous Editors' Choice, is now running an old version of Android on woefully outdated hardware. Then again, it still has a better display and a nicer keyboard than the Kyocera Rise. If you're willing to forfeit the keyboard, the HTC One V ?has a much sharper display and a far better camera than the Rise. And if you're willing to increase your budget considerably, the HTC EVO V 4G ?has a fast dual-core processor, 4G WiMAX support, and a sharp, glasses-free 3D display.
