Apple Website No Longer Calls Maps ?Most Powerful? Service Available

apple-maps-ios-6-descriptionFollowing continued criticism of Apple Maps, CEO Tim Cook directly addressed the issue with an apology and admission that there are some excellent alternatives out there available to iOS users. With that, the Cupertino company has also made a much more low-key acknowledgment on its website by erasing its ?most powerful mapping service ever? claim from its Maps description.

As you can see in the Before and After picture above, the company made one final edit to the service?s explanation. Apple previously claimed Maps in iOS 6 was the best of the best, but after a number of scathing reports to the contrary, Apple has wised up and changed its tune on the matter. Both actions and words are speaking quite loudly for Apple at the moment.

With the last loose-end tied up, this may put the whole debacle to rest as Apple moves toward creating a more consistent experience. It was never going to be up-to-par with the more established mapping services out there, and Apple is openly conceding that quite a bit of work still needs to be done in order to offer the ?most powerful? service around.

Moffitt Cancer Center researcher helps develop prostate cancer testing

Julio M. Pow-Sang, M.D., chair of Moffitt Cancer Center's Department of Genitourinary Oncology, and colleagues have published two prostate cancer articles in the September issue of JNCCN ? The Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The articles review and clarify recent updates made to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) guidelines for the screening and treatment of prostate cancer.

According to the NCCN, nearly 242,000 cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2012, accounting for 29 percent of new cancers among men. It is estimated that more than 28,000 men will die from the disease this year.

According to the journal, prostate cancer is "over diagnosed and over treated" and is subject to a controversy "fueled by large screening studies." This month, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the NCCN has offered support for active surveillance, a strategy by which men with low-risk tumors, often classified as clinically insignificant, are monitored over time.

"Depending on the disease characteristics and the patient's life expectancy and personal preference, active surveillance may be a viable alternative to immediate and radical treatment," Pow-Sang said. "For others with high-risk, localized tumors or locally advanced disease, there are recent treatment advances that should be considered."

New agents and therapy combinations

According to the NCCN, external beam radiation and androgen deprivation therapy have been the traditional treatments for patients with high-risk tumors. However, the NCCN reports that brachytherapy, either permanent seed implant or temporary placement (high dose radiation), combined with external beam radiation and androgen deprivation therapy is increasingly being used for these patients.

The first article, Prostate Cancer, version 3.2012, noted that two new agents ? abiraterone acetate and immunotherapy sipuleucel-T ? are welcome therapeutic additions for patients with late-stage disease and poor prognosis.

Abiraterone acetate, which inhibits a key enzyme related to prostate cancer, can be given to patients after their chemotherapy. Studies have shown that it can also be used in chemotherapy-na?ve patients.

Sipuleucel-T, a second line therapy, is a live cancer vaccine approved in 2010 for treating asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients with metastatic prostate cancer. The NCCN has recommended the new drug for use after chemotherapy failure or as treatment along with chemotherapy.

"The new NCCN guidelines highlight important updates to the management of prostate cancer," concluded Pow-Sang and his co-authors. "These protocols are updated annually and more often when new, high-quality clinical data become available. The guidelines are based on evidence from clinical trials combined with expert consensus."

Active surveillance and PSA density, percent free, and biopsy cores

In a second article, Enrollment Criteria Controversies for Active Surveillance and Triggers for Conversion to Treatment in Prostate Cancer, Pow-Sang and co-author David D. Buethe, M.D., a urologic oncology fellow at Moffitt, examine the controversy and criteria for implementing active surveillance for patients with asymptomatic prostate cancer and identify the triggers that would convert active surveillance patients to active treatment status.

The authors note that for those patients with prostate cancers at low-risk for progression, the active surveillance strategy was proposed a decade ago but is recently receiving more attention as a viable management option.

"However, critical uncertainties still surround active surveillance," Pow-Sang said. "The criteria that qualify a patient as low or very low risk are not clear, nor is the definition of disease progression."

In this article, Pow-Sang and Buethe reviewed recent literature regarding those uncertainties, examining criteria for assisting in selecting men for active surveillance, including PSA density, percent free versus percent total PSA, biopsy positive core results and "volume of involvement" data.

"A PSA density of greater than 0.08 ng/mL/g has been identified as a significant predictor of future disease progression in those with low-risk prostate cancer," reported Pow-Sang. "However, some clinicians use a level of 0.15 ng/mL/g as a threshold."

Percent-free PSA has been found to be a significant predictor of organ-confined disease, said Pow-Sang and Buethe, noting that some reports have shown a significant indirect correlation between percent-free PSA and prostate cancer volume; but as yet this parameter is "not widely accepted as a predictor of cancer extent."

They also looked at studies on positive cores from biopsies and the extent to which core results could be used to develop criteria for treatment. Reports have shown the predictive value of positive biopsy cores, but the frequency for performing prostate biopsies remains controversial for outcomes of active surveillance patients, Pow-Sang said.

"Biopsies are not without consequences," he said. "Rectal bleeding and serious infectious complications from frequent biopsies need to be considered."

Additionally, no standard protocol exists, and controversy remains, for the frequency of PSA testing and the digital rectal exam for patients who are under active surveillance.

"Current guidelines vary," Pow-Sang said. "There are recommendations that the PSA and digital rectal exam should be performed every three to six months, or the PSA every three months and the digital rectal exam every six months. The frequency of biopsies is also variable, from once a year to up to every three years."

New potential tools

Pow-Sang and Buethe also report that a new tool, the PCA3 urinary marker, may be useful. PCA3 is a urine test used to quantify copies of the known prostate cancer gene 3. A PCA3 score of 35 or greater is considered possibly malignant. The test is prostate cancer specific and unaffected by prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia, both of which have confounded the results of PSA testing.

The future of active surveillance

"Most studies report that 30 percent of active surveillance-classified men will be reclassified in the short term to clinically significant cancer that may require treatment," noted Pow-Sang. "Once more, PSA velocity (how quickly the PSA score rises) or PSA doubling time (how often the score doubles) has no clear role in active surveillance."

When counseling men with early prostate cancer, all treatment options, risks and complications should be discussed, Pow-Sang confirmed.

"Active surveillance is a reasonable management strategy for low-risk and very low risk prostate cancer, but allows for continual reassessment and identification of progressive tumors."

Frisco, a pioneer in green building, celebrates a decade of energy ...

Frisco, a pioneer in green building, celebrates a decade of energy savings

This year, Frisco celebrates 11 years of energy efficient building after breaking ground as a national leader on efficient building a decade ago.

A Darling home at Panther Creek in Frisco.

Many residents may not know that Frisco was the first city in the nation to adopt the Energy Star building guidelines as its mandatory minimum standard for new home construction.

The Frisco City Council voted to make the Energy Start standards mandatory for residential and commercial builders starting in 2001 ? a decision that helped save nearly $45 million in residential utility costs for Frisco residents over the next decade.

Today, Frisco remains a leader, with only a handful of Texas cities joining them in having green building codes or specially written energy standards for public buildings. Those other cities are Dallas, Houston, Austin, Plano, and San Antonio.

Since the green building code was enacted more than 16,500 new buildings in Frisco have been built to? the program?s tighter guidelines, which required structures to use 15 percent less energy than they would following the national minimum building codes.

The average energy savings per home in Frisco was $436 annually as a result of the program.

These Energy Star homes accomplished this savings in a variety of ways, through a more tightly sealed building sheath or ?envelope?, the use of Energy Star appliances and more efficient lighting, said Steve Covington, chief building official for Frisco.

?They were a little more costly to the builder, upfront, but the savings cost to the customer offset that cost, as well as the improvement to air quality,? Covington said.

City officials have measured Frisco?s contribution to improved air quality by calculating the carbon dioxide, NOx (nitrogen oxides) and sulfur oxide pollution that was avoided by building more efficient homes. They calculate that the program saved 39,223 tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas; 112 tons of NOx, a contributor to ground-level ozone, and 121 tons of SO2? pollution.

Frisco?s green building program also focused on water conservation and waste recycling, encouraging builders to recycle lumber and bricks. The builders met the guidelines if their houses achieved a Home Energy Rating Score (HERS) of 86. (A home with a HERS score of 100 would typically meet minimum guidelines; homes with a lower score were more efficient and those with a score above 100 were using excessive energy.)

The EPA celebrated 20 years of the national Energy Star for buildings program in 2012, calculating that it had saved American families and businesses $230 billion on their utility bills. By 2012, the list of participating cities had grown to the hundreds, and many commercial and residential buildings also had voluntarily built to Energy Star standards.

As in Frisco, air quality, a key goal of the program, had benefited greatly with an aggregate savings across the nation of 1.7 billion metric tons of carbon pollution avoided.

The savings presented by a more efficient house has always been good for home owners, Covington said, helping protect them from high electricity bills and adding to the long-term value of their home and enhancing the value of the community.

But those positives aren?t always clear to the homebuyer at the point of sale, and for builders that presents a conundrum, he said. If they spend more initially for better heating and cooling units, efficient windows and other energy saving components, they can only get their money back if the customer also values these improvements.

Over time, consumers have recognized the value of an energy efficient home, and residential builders have been able to promote energy efficiency, turning it into an effective marketing tool, Covington said.

Enlightened consumers, in fact, are demanding energy efficient homes.

?I think people are expecting it nowdays,? says Chad Schramme, vice president for vice president of construction and purchasing for Darling Homes.

Darling has built about 1,000 homes in Frisco over the last 18 years. The local builder, owned by three brothers, was already developing a plan for ?whole house? efficiency when it moved into the Frisco market, Schramme said.

While some competitors might offer one or two ?green? features, those can sometimes fail to work appropriately if the entire house isn?t taken into consideration. For instance, a highly rated AC system won?t deliver on its promise if the house is not properly sealed, he said.

Darling wanted to make sure that all the efficiency aspects of a home worked together, so it developed a package of elements that work together.

Currently those elements include reflective radiant barrier roof decking, air returns in all bedrooms, a 16 SEER-rated AC system, conserving water shower heads and faucets and Energy Star-rated appliances, Schramme explained.

?I want everything working in unison on that house to drive down to the most efficient [operations], air quality, energy efficiency, moisture management and water efficiency,? he said. ?Those four things tie in that whole house approach.?

This fit perfectly into Frisco?s more ambitious plan, with Darling?s homes aiming to meet two compatible industry standards, a lower HERS score, which denotes energy savings, and the Energy Star guidelines set by the City of Frisco.

Frisco?s approach also is evolving. For the past year, building officials have been working on a revision to the city?s green building requirements, with input from builders, suppliers, installers and manufacturers in the building industries. (You can see the draft at the Frisco city green building webpage.)

The updated rules would allow builders more flexibility to use new programs that have arisen in reason years, explains Covington.

Builders will still have to go above and beyond, aiming for the same 15 percent better efficiency over the minimum building codes (currently, the 2009 Energy Code is the Energy Code for Texas), which the city estimates will save the typical homeowner $501 in electricity costs annually.

But builders will have the option of meeting those requirements by building to Energy Star or ?the Texas Green Built energy standards or other independent modeling systems that have come out and streamlined the process for the construction industry, Covington said.

Some of the new programs, such as the Texas Green Built program, may actually be more compatible with Frisco?s goals, Covington said, because they add water efficiency guidelines, an area the Energy Star program does not address.

Frisco?s updated draft ordinance aims for an increase in a building?s water efficiency of 25 to 35 percent.

The draft ordinance has yet to go before city council, so it is not in final form, he said.

?We look ahead to our community being a healthy community in the years to come, so our property values maintain a high value,? Covington said. ?With the economy lately and energy prices going up, that helps that homeowner stay in their home and know they?re not wasting energy.?

  • In 2011, about 26 percent of all new single-family homes built in the U.S. earned the ?Energy Star label.
  • A home that meets Energy Star standards will use at least 15 percent less energy than a home meeting the minimum code (the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code).
  • The Energy Star program is a ?fully integrated, whole-house? approach, according to the EPA, requiring that house systems work well together and include air sealing, quality insulation, high-performance windows, high efficiency HVAC systems, Energy Star rated lighting and appliances and comprehensive water management systems that protect roofs, walls and foundations from moisture damage.

The Dangers & Delusions of Sweating to Detox. | elephant journal

Sweating Isn?t So Cool.

There?s a baffling new obsession with dripping sweat.

As Courtney Rubin writes in her New York Times article, ?Some Like it Hotter,? more yoga studios and health clubs are accommodating their clients by baking them in heated temperatures of up to 105 degrees?or even more.

?We?re turning it up to 110 degrees by popular demand,? the instructor, Kate Albarelli, 31, announced in the sort of cheerful tone that would usually signal a time to rest. The women looked as delighted as if she?d given them one.?

Rubin says devotees get a sense of satisfaction from sweating. It?s satisfying because they believe it helps them to detox. And there?s the brag factor.?It?s satisfyingly hip to be the hottest.

But high temperatures can be hard on the body. Heat-related illness isn?t so sexy, and it occurs when the body?s temperature control system is overloaded. The hotter the air and the higher the humidity, the more likely that is to happen.

Every year about 500 people die from getting too hot, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While death from heat overload is more likely in the elderly and small children, anyone can be adversely affected?even athletes.

The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research reported that more than 40 high school athletes have died from heatstroke within the past 20 years. Heatstroke is a potentially fatal condition that can occur when the temperature gets too high.

Heat stroke is 100 percent preventable simply by avoiding extreme heat?the kind of temperatures that we?re now seeing routinely in the yoga and fitness world.

Maybe if heating up to near the tipping point for catastrophe actually helped the body to detoxify from environmental pollutants, heavy metals, and the ubiquitous onslaught of synthetic chemicals in our world, it would be worth it. But the truth is, sweating doesn?t really help much with detoxification at all.

Chris Woolston?s reports in the LA Times,

?Sweating definitely won?t clear the body of mercury or other metals, says Donald Smith, a professor of environmental toxicology at UC Santa Cruz, who studies treatments for metal poisoning. Almost all toxic metals in the body are excreted through urine or feces, he says. And less than 1 percent are lost through sweat. In other words, you?ll do far more detoxifying in the bathroom than you ever could in a sauna.?

For meth addicts, it might be a good idea. There?s evidence the body detoxifies from amphetamines and a few other ?fat-loving? molecules like seizure medicines through sweating. Allen Barnes and his colleagues at the National Institute on Drug Abuse have been studying the sweating out of meth and other abused substances to support drug treatment programs and workplace screenings. Meth heads aren?t likely the ones rapidly transitioning through sun salutations in 105 degree heat. They may need detoxing, but they?re not getting it at the gym.

Yet, when it comes to what most of us want from detoxing (a way to get to rid of the potentially toxic synthetic chemicals we take in to our bodies through eating, drinking, and breathing in a polluted world), there?s little evidence that sweating helps at all.

In 2010, the journal,?Public Health, reported on the detoxing potential of sweating out perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). PFCs are the synthetic chemicals we pick up from stain repellants on furniture, clothing, carpets and food packaging. One form, polytetrafluoroethylene, is the non-stick stuff on cookware. PFCs and other similarly structured persistent organic pollutants accumulate in the human body and are becoming an increasing public health concern. They?re implicated in liver toxicity, reproductive problems and nervous system dysfunction. It?s too bad the authors found that you can?t detox from these environmental toxins by turning up the perspiration.

Sweating through an intense workout at 110 degrees may be the hipsters obsession right now, but it doesn?t help much with detoxification.

On the other hand, there are known dangers of overheating?heat exhaustion, heat stroke, electrolyte depletion and dehydration. Opt for energetic workouts in 70 to 85 degree temperatures and sweat a little, but not too much. What it boils down to is that sweating isn?t really all that cool.

The Daring Vision to Renew Downtown Detroit

Here it is, 2025, and Dan Gilbert still feels a pinch of incredulity when he looks out his office window at the bustling streets of downtown Detroit. Less than 20 years ago, this part of the city was a ghost town. Now office workers fill the sidewalks during the day, and at night the walks are alive with people going to restaurants and bars, theaters and nightclubs, art galleries and sporting events. Many of these people not only work but also live downtown. That's all because Gilbert, founder and chairman of Quicken Loans and owner of several other businesses, teamed up with a few ambitious souls and decided to take a chance.

It was 2010. Gilbert, the son of a Detroit bar owner, had spent the previous 25 years building Quicken Loans into the nation's largest on-line mortgage lender. The company, based in the Detroit suburbs, had more than 4000 employees. Gilbert's decision to move his business to downtown Detroit bucked the historical trend of city-based firms relocating to suburban office parks.

Gilbert says he made the move not just out of altruism, but because it made business sense. "They were having a skyscraper sale in Detroit," he says. He snagged a bushel of buildings, some of them historic landmarks, at rock-bottom prices, plus a parking lot and four garages.

Soon Gilbert's office and retail space began filling up with a variety of businesses, notably tech startups, which were key to his strategy to turn Detroit into the Silicon Valley of the Midwest. "Wealth is created by brains today," he says. "It's not muscle anymore."

His strategy is so successful that downtown living spaces fill up, and people begin spilling into adjacent neighborhoods. "People are moving here because it's where the action is," Gilbert says. "The big sell is that they're making a change in this town."

Downtown Detroit's vitality was presaged by the construction of the Compuware Building in 2003. Peter Karmanos Jr., the co-founder of Compuware, promptly moved 4000 employees from the suburbs to the new 15-story tower. This influx of talent planted Detroit's flag as a future high-tech center.

Companies such as GalaxE.Solutions, a healthcare-industry software developer, joined the downtown Detroit club in 2011, when CEO Tim Bryan placed his 2000 employees in a building that had been acquired by Gilbert and his partners. Bryan tips his hat to the people and businesses who led the way. "Peter Karmanos, Mike Ilitch, Dan Gilbert, GM, the Fords?they're the reason I chose to locate here. They made the investment. I came here as an outsider because of those insiders."

Dan Savage Walks Into a Church and Gets Applauded By A Priest ...

By Nicole Brydson tags: Brooklyn Book Festival, Dan Savage, St. Ann's

Monogamish Panel

Thankfully YouTube has allowed our account to upload more than 15 minutes at a time because this is seriously a great video. Last but not least in our Book Fest video series this year came from the last and likely largest panel of the day featuring Dan Savage.

With marriage equality on everyone?s lips, it still seems valid to ask the question, ?Why marriage?? and ?Why monogamy?? Our authors weigh monogamy, marriage, its alternatives, and what it all means for how we live today. Syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage (The Commitment) has advocated ?monogam-ish? relationships; anthropologist Christopher Ryan, Ph.D. (Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality), argues that monogamy isn't inherent to humans; Kristin Davis (The Manhattan Madam?s Guide to Sex), aka ?The Manhattan Madam,? will provide her insights into the tangled web of sex and commitment; and Eric Klinenberg (Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone) examine what these changing attitudes look like at a societal level. Moderated by Kate Bolick (upcoming Among the Suitors: Single Women I Have Loved).

Watch the video at 19:45 as the openly gay pastor of St. Ann's church pipes up and introduces himself to the liberal gasps from the audience. He belies their anxiety and says, "The foundations of this church haven't shaken to the ground because we grasp for an honest conversation about human relationships and human sexuality," adding later, "I just want to say a public thank you to Dan Savage for It Gets Better."

HBT: Wright now Mets? all-time hits leader

David Wright smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning of Wednesday?s game against the Pirates, pushing the Mets to an early 2-0 lead and becoming the franchise?s all-time leader in hits.

Ed Kranepool held the high-mark previously, having netted 1,418 total hits between the 1962 and 1979 seasons. He was a .261/.316/.377 career hitter.

Wright, 29, entered play Wednesday with a .301/.381/.506 career batting line in eight-plus major league seasons. He?s hitting .306/.391/.493 with 20 home runs and 88 RBI through 642 plate appearances this year.

The next franchise record that Wright should break is Daryl Strawberry?s home run total. Wright currently has 203. Strawberry tallied 252 in his eight years wearing a Mets uniform and 335 in his career.

Wright already owns franchise highs in total bases, runs scored, extra-base hits, walks and RBI.

Most Popular Money Making Methods On The Internet

Earning money is a person?s primary concern in life. He or she needs to pay bills, feed the family, buy expensive things, etc. Nowadays, the internet is an inextricable part of a person?s life and people stay online for a large part of the day. If this time spent on the internet could also be utilized to make money, nothing could be better. There are several means by which this particular objective can be achieved. All that is needed is a personal computer and some time to spare, coupled with a burning desire to succeed.

Presented here is a discussion of some of the methods that can be used to earn money on the internet.

Getting Paid To Read Emails

This is one of the earliest and most surefire ways to earn money online. All that is needed is a working email address with a valid address provider like Yahoo! or Hotmail or Rediff. It is a very simple task. Advertisers and service providers from all around the world pay people to view advertisements that they send via email. All that a person needs to do is open the email and click on the given link. Every email read adds some money to an online account which is then transferred electronically to your own bank account. However, a single email will fetch a person not more than $1. The best method to increase such income is to refer people to the website and increase your referral chain. The original person gets a certain percentage of the referral income as well.

Taking Online Surveys

Marketing companies are very eager to know about the likes and dislikes of their consumers. This way they can channelize their resources into manufacturing products that will actually be appreciated by consumers. They do not want to waste time and energy making things that nobody wants to use. Hence they design questionnaires and surveys to help gauge the popularity of their products or services. They also pay people who take time to answer those surveys. This is how one can earn through taking online surveys. The payment depends on the length of the survey taken.

Make Money By Testing Games

This is an extremely popular method of money making today. Though it may sound like a dream, it is true indeed. People and companies will pay you to test games and applications they design, before going public with them. There are several people around the world who today earn millions by testing games and apps.

Promote Affiliate Products

This method helps one earn the largest online bucks. The aforesaid ways are good no doubt, but barring a few cases, money earned by those methods reach stagnancy after a certain point of time. Affiliate marketing has an edge in this respect. As the affiliate chain goes on branching and branching more, the percentage income of every node or person in the system increases proportionally. However, a clear knowledge of how the affiliate marketing system works is very necessary in this case.

Article Writing

This is a rage among online money makers nowadays. It includes a huge gamut of activities. From writing product reviews to blog posts or lifestyle articles, a person can write on almost any topic that catches his fancy and get paid for it. This job is also totally freelance based and people generally get paid depending on the number of words they write in a given time period. The main criteria is that the quality of articles should be decent and although referencing can be done off the internet, they should never be entirely copied. Plagiarism is a strict restriction in this particular field.

Sell Pictures

A lot of money can also be made by selling pictures that a person takes on the internet. This is a new method of earning money that is catching up nowadays. People today take lots of pictures on their digital cameras and a surprising number of those pictures turn to to be of really superior quality, owing to excellent editing tools as well. Hosting these pictures on blogs or personal websites for sale is a good method to make money. Magazines and periodicals often buy pictures from such websites for use in their publications.

Online Tutoring

This is another innovative method of earning money that has gained popularity among college students today. They use applications like Skype or other video chat softwares to tutor other students at remote locations on previously worked out timings. Often they also make tutoring videos and send them to their subscribers. Their payment gets directly transferred to their bank accounts via electronic fund transfer facilities.

These were an introduction to some of the most popular money making methods of the day, whereby a person can earn a quick buck while using the internet to supplement or add to his or her regular income.

SimpleTV clarifies shipping dates, tells backers units will start arriving October 10th

According to Simple.TV, there have been articles circulating around the interwebs that may have caused confusion amongst parties interested about the shipping dates of its facile white puck. So, in order to induce some clarity, the folks behind the project have posted a Kickstarter update to let its backers know their Simple.TVs will be arriving soon -- somewhere between October 10th and 15th, to be precise. On the other hand, Simple.TV is also set to start taking pre-orders on its website tomorrow from folks who missed out on the crowd-funded party, with these particular units estimated to ship "within 20 days" after the order has been placed. The good news is we're only a couple of weeks away from its long-overdue arrival; in the meantime, however, don't forget we have our own hands-on for you to graciously pore over.

Auto Sales Barreling Ahead, But Trucks & SUVs Lag

The U.S. economy is giving mixed signals these days. Stocks are up, as are home sales, but hiring -- though not on the decline -- is often described as anemic.

And yet, the U.S. auto market is charging full-steam ahead. In fact, J.D. Power predicts that the industry will see 12% growth this year, with 11.8 million vehicles sold at retail and another 2.7 million sold to fleet operators, for total sales of 14.5 million.

Power bases those predictions on current sales data, which shows that U.S. consumers are likely to purchase?952,200 new vehicles this month. That's 12% higher than September of last year, and maintains the 12% pace of growth we've seen earlier this year.

Winners, losers

Power says that most segments of the auto market are on track to see big gains in 2012. The biggest of the bunch will likely be?sub-compacts, compacts, and midsize vehicles, which could see sales growth of 25% (or more) above 2011.?

The losers? Midsize utilities and large SUVs.

Our take

J.D. Power's predictions are in keeping with trends we've seen throughout 2012 in the new and used auto markets, most of which are a result of high gas prices. (Today's national average: $3.81.)

In short, current shoppers are looking for fuel-efficient rides. That's why the average fuel economy of new cars sold is on its way up again?and why used vehicles -- especially gas-sippers like the Toyota Prius -- are retaining their values so well.?

The strength of the 2012 auto market is also a reflection of the challenges seen in 2011. Japanese automakers in particular struggled with natural disasters like the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that struck in March of last year, which was followed a few months later by torrential flooding,?crippling production in Thailand. That caused new-vehicle shortages, which in turn caused prices to stay high, deterring some customers.

But 2012 doesn't just look good by comparison to 2011: it looks good no matter what metric you use. In fact, LMC Automotive (formerly J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting)?predicts that this year's growth spurt will continue in 2013, with total sales of 15 million vehicles, 12.3 million of which will be sold to retail shoppers like us.

If you've got other thoughts about the growth of the auto sector -- or why that growth may/may not continue -- drop us a line, or leave a note in the comments below.

Quality Care For Your Loved One Is Backed Up By Elder Law ...

Many senior citizens face debilitating health conditions such as dementia, arthritis, stroke, or immobility. These beloved elders are often the victim of fraud, inappropriate government intervention, financial ruin, inadequate medical care, and nursing home abuse or neglect. They often fail to mention any of these personal problems to family members, as they do not want to cause unnecessary worry or seem incapable of handling their own affairs.

Sometimes, even when caring family members make heroic and tireless efforts to help their loved ones, loopholes in the law make the resolution of many situations next to impossible. Thankfully, with a little advice from a competent attorney, supportive family members can close these loopholes, reaching a satisfactory resolution to most of these issues. For those instances where family members cannot fight these battles alone, a trusted attorney who specializes in elder law can be the hero of the day.

If your elder is placed in a hospital or nursing home without adequate insurance or savings to pay for their care, their assets can liquidated by the court. As a caring family member, you must take immediate steps to secure these assets from liquidation. Recent changes in the law have created new requirements for the payment of elder medical care, including rapid seizure of physical property. This includes financial assets, home furnishings, and all other possessions ? including life insurance policies and joint bank accounts held with healthy spouses.

While your family member may allow you to handle their affairs while they are physically healthy, they might change their minds if they become ill, are hospitalized, or enter a nursing home. If you do not have a legally binding, signed and notarized agreement between the two of you granting guardianship or Power of Attorney, you may find yourself unable to help them during critical decisions.

Without these documents, bank accounts cannot be accessed, mortgages or other property payments cannot be made, the finer details of various personal matters or accounts cannot be discussed, and end-of-life decisions cannot be made. Instead, these important matters will be decided by a government-appointed elder liaison, who acts on the behalf of everyone other than your loved one. Therefore, it is imperative to make these arrangements well in advance. Ensure that you know your rights and the rights of your loved one by speaking with an experienced, professional elder law attorney.

Elder care law is of great importance for those who are already institutionalized. Nursing homes are often operated on an extremely tight budget, with less than adequate staffing levels or inexperienced nurse?s aides. In fact, in many states only one certified nurse could be present in an entire facility. In some cases the majority of nursing home care is conducted by people who were hired straight off the street, without any prior elder care experience whatsoever.

When elder care abuse or neglect is discovered, nursing homes quickly jump to their defense, making logical excuses for bruises, bed sores, or psychological trauma. In some cases, documentation of care or treatment schedules are doctored in order to appear legitimate and within the letter of the law. Add to this fact that nursing homes are required to provide, on average, only 45 minutes of care per day per patient, and it quickly becomes obvious that legal help is not only desirable, but necessary.

If you or someone you know are facing an elder care issue or have questions about elder law, contact a competent attorney right away. Remember, in many cases timing is of the essence. Neglecting to take critical steps could make all the difference. After all, you?ll want to shield your elder from harm rather than relinquishing all rights and responsibilities to an uncaring government.

Lawyer Identity Theft

You might think if anyone knows about the threat of identity theft and the steps needed to avoid it, it would be a lawyer. These people spend a living dealing with criminals. However, as a recent article in the Florida Bar News illustrates, attorneys are just as much at risk as anyone else. Florida lawyer Laurie Moss recently reported that she provided thieves with her personal information when providing it for what she thought was a background check for a law firm position in California.

When she showed up to report for her first day at the firm, she found out that the California lawyers did not exist. She does not know who ended up with her Social Security number, driver?s license number and other information. She also fears that whoever it is knows that she is an attorney and the thieves may try to practice law in her name.

One of the mistakes that Moss made was providing her personal information to a placement agency, which did not confirm that the job was a legitimate one. There were a few red flags. The placement agency?s IP address could be traced back to Bermuda and a lot of the language on its website was stolen from another law firm?s site, for two things. The agency also never met with the lawyers in person, of course.

Moss may be in for a hard road since the fake firm got both her personal information and her financial information, provided in order to get her her compensation for the legal work. It would help her if she had made this mistake while signed up for an identity theft protection plan. While she reported the issue to the credit reporting agencies, her bank and the Florida Bar Association, she could face some serious problems down the road.

With identity theft coverage, she could get instant alerts when it?s suspected that thieves are using her information. She could also receive compensation for some or all of the funds needed to recover her identity if it is used in a negative manner. Of course, she could have been more careful about how she handled applying for the ?job,? but everyone makes mistakes and that?s why we have people and policies to back us up.

Language use is simpler than previously thought, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For more than 50 years, language scientists have assumed that sentence structure is fundamentally hierarchical, made up of small parts in turn made of smaller parts, like Russian nesting dolls.

A new Cornell study suggests language use is simpler than they had thought.

Co-author Morten Christiansen, Cornell professor of psychology and co-director of the Cornell Cognitive Science Program, and his colleagues say that language is actually based on simpler sequential structures, like clusters of beads on a string.

"What we're suggesting is that the language system deals with words by grouping them into little clumps that are then associated with meaning," he said.

Sentences are made up of such word clumps, or "constructions," that are understood when arranged in a particular order. For example, the word sequence "bread and butter" might be represented as a construction, whereas the reverse sequence of words ("butter and bread") would likely not.

The sequence concept has simplicity on its side; language is naturally sequential, given the temporal cues that help us understand and be understood as we use language. Moreover, the hierarchy concept doesn't take into account the many other cues that help convey meaning, such as the setting and knowing what was said before and the speaker's intention.

The researchers drew on evidence in language-related fields from psycholinguistics to cognitive neuroscience. For example, research in evolutionary biology indicates that humans acquired language (and animals did not) because we have evolved abilities in a number of areas, such as being able to correctly guess others' intentions and learn a large number of sounds that we then relate to meaning to create words. In contrast, the hierarchy concept suggests humans have language thanks only to highly specialized "hardware" in the brain, which neuroscientists have yet to find.

Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that the same set of brain regions seem to be involved in both sequential learning and language, suggesting that language is processed sequentially. And several recent psycholinguistic studies have shown that how well adults and children perform on a sequence learning task strongly predicts how well they can process the deluge of words that come at us in rapid succession when we're listening to someone speak. "The better you are at dealing with sequences, the easier it is for you to comprehend language," Christiansen said.

The study by Christiansen and his colleagues has important implications for several language-related fields. From an evolutionary perspective, it could help close what has been seen as a large gap between the communications systems of humans and other nonhuman primates. "This research allows us a better understanding of our place in nature, in that we can tie our language ability, our communication abilities, more closely to what we can see in other species. It could have a big impact in terms of allowing us to think in more humble terms about the origin of language in humans," Christiansen said.

The research could also affect natural language processing, the area of computer science that deals with human language, by encouraging scholars to focus on sequential structure when trying to create humanlike speech and other types of language processing, Christiansen said. He pointed out that machines already successfully perform such tasks as translation and speech recognition thanks to algorithms based on sequential structures.

The study, "How hierarchical is language use?" was published Sept. 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The research was funded by the European Union, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Binational Science Foundation.

UK's Cameron speaks to Merkel, Hollande on BAE-EADS

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron has held talks with the French and German leaders in an attempt to ensure UK interests are protected if a $45 billion proposed merger between BAE Systems and EADS goes ahead, his spokesman said on Monday.

European aerospace group EADS and British defense contractor BAE announced this month that they were in advanced talks over a merger to create an industry giant.

BAE's UK workforce stands at 35,000, while EADS has about 15,000 employees in the country.

"Given the nature of the companies' activities the government will clearly have some involvement and we need to ensure that the UK's public interest is properly protected," Cameron's spokesman told reporters at a briefing on Monday.

"We are talking to the companies to ensure that that is the case," the spokesman said. "The prime minister spoke to Chancellor (Angela) Merkel on Friday night and has spoken to President (Francois) Hollande this morning."

Cameron's spokesman gave no further details about the talks but added that the prime minister had yet to raise the issue with U.S. President Barack Obama.

BAE, which has 40,000 staff in the United States, has a Special Security Arrangement with the Pentagon that allows it to work as a subcontractor on classified contracts.

Britain's cross-party parliamentary defense committee on Monday launched an inquiry into the possible merger, which would be the biggest shake-up in Europe's aerospace and defense sector in more than a decade.

The influential committee said it would take evidence during October and November to establish the impact any merger would have on the protection of British sovereign capabilities, defense exports, Britain's relationship with the U.S. and European allies, and jobs and trade.

The two companies' manufacturing sites in Britain include BAE's shipyards in Scotland and EADS' Airbus wing factory in north Wales.

"BAE are leading talks with the British government but EADS are very much involved - they (the government) are seeking assurances on jobs from the Airbus side as much as the BAE side," said a source close to BAE.

BAE received a fresh boost to its plans to merge with EADS when former British Defense Secretary Liam Fox told the country's Sunday Telegraph newspaper that he backed the deal as long as important hurdles could be overcome.

"Liam Fox's support for the deal is especially significant given his Atlanticist leanings. He is one of the key people of the traditional (Conservative) right and without his support it would be more complicated," said a UK defense industry official who asked not to be named.

Equinix Unveils Backup Hub for London Traders ? Data Center ...

What happens if a power outage or other disaster takes an entire financial district offline? Equinix rolled out its answer to that question today in Slough, England, where it opened new data center space designed specifically for displaced financial traders.

Equinix (EQIX) has launched the third phase of its London LD5 International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, which adds 4,000 square meters (about 43,000 square feet) of data center space with capacity for 1,400 cabinets. The expansion also features 130 dedicated Business Continuity Trading desks, providing emergency trading capabilities for financial services firms. Many disaster recovery providers supply desk space for workers, but LD5 offers specialized trading desks and workstations equipped with multiple monitors, specialized trading phones with voice recording, and numerous market data feeds.

The Equinix facilities in Slough are close enough for London-based trading staff to access quickly, but located outside the metropolitan area to comply with regulatory guidelines for disaster recovery and continuity of operations. The proximity of the LD4 and LD5 data centers to a transatlantic network cable landing station also provides a very fast connection between London and North American financial markets like New York and Chicago, which reduces trading latency. Equinix has opened similar facilities in Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Milan, New York and Sao Paulo.

?Financial market participants and service providers are key growth drivers currently, and they are experiencing growing regulatory pressure to put business continuity capacity in place,? said Russell Poole, managing director, Equinix UK. ?This is why our latest build-out features are what we believe is the most comprehensive and best-connected business continuity offering in the London market today.?

Once the fourth and final phase of the build-out is completed, LD5 will provide 16,000 square meters (172,000 square feet) of customer space, with capacity for 5,600 cabinets in total. The LD4/LD5 facilities are located on the same campus and connected by more than 1,000 diverse dark fiber links into Central London with global access to more than 900 network providers.

Customs delaying some Japanese imports to China

TOKYO (AP) ? Japanese exporters are keeping a wary eye on China with customs inspections increasing in some Chinese cities as tensions over disputed islands remain elevated.

Yumiko Yoshimura, an official with the Japan External Trade Organization, said Monday that delays in shipments to China have been caused by an increased number of custom inspections in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tianjin.

Kintetsu World Express, Japan's second-biggest freight-forwarding company, has cautioned its customers about possible delays at Chinese customs, although it hasn't received reports of any specific troubles.

Chinese attacked numerous Japanese-owned stores and factories in China last week after the Japanese government bought several disputed islands in the East China Sea from their Japanese owners.

Anyone whos ever tried marketing IT products or services knows that its a specialist field. Your customers in the IT industry have very unique and specific requirements, and that means you do too. In order to write compelling copy around your offering, you need a copywriter with a solid understanding of the IT world someone whos not afraid to call themselves an IT Copywriter.

So how do you know when youve found an IT copywriter? And more importantly how do you know what to expect from them? The following 10 tips will give you a good understanding of the qualities to look for the things that make a copywriter an IT copywriter.

1) IT background

Perhaps the most beneficial quality in an IT copywriter is a solid background of some sort in the IT industry. If your copywriter shares an understanding of your domain, youll spend far less time explaining the benefits of your product or service. Remember the last time you watched someone glaze over as you waxed lyrical about the wonders of your latest technology? You dont want that to happen when youre briefing your copywriter. More importantly, you dont want that happening when your potential customers read your copy!

2) Technical writing experience

Good technical writers are experienced in bridging knowledge gaps. This means they have to understand the technology, but they also have to be able to talk about it in the laypersons language. A copywriter with technical writing experience in the IT industry is likely to have domain knowledge and an ability to hit the ground running. Theyll be quick on the uptake, so theyll understand your product or service more rapidly than most.

Of course, not every technical writer is a IT copywriter. You need to be sure they can write compelling copy not just dry instruction manuals. Take a look at their samples and testimonials before making a decision.

The other important consideration especially if youre after a website copywriter is, do they have online writing experience? Writing for an online medium is entirely different to writing for print. Readers have different requirements and objectives, and reading conditions are very different. Many technical writers have written online help, so they should know how to cater to these differences. To be sure, ask them to recommend a maximum page length or word count per page. The correct answer should include some comment on the trade-off between the problems of scrolling and the need for a high keyword count for SEO. Ask them whether they prefer long sentences or short (and hope to hear short).

3) Further Education

IT products and services are generally very complex in themselves. Whats more, the needs of the end-customer are also very complex and unique. This means theres normally quite a steep learning curve for anyone new. Ask your IT copywriter if they have tertiary qualifications. Its not essential, and by itself its no guarantee of quality copy, but its generally a good indicator of someone whos been trained in the art of learning (i.e. researching, information filtering and modelling, knowledge retention, etc.).

The flip-side of that coin is to be wary of people who are technically qualified. Dont discount them on sight (many technical people have made great IT copywriters); just remember that technically trained people have a tendency to take a lot of things for granted when speaking to lay-people. Your IT copywriter needs to be able to understand the technology and its complexities, but still relate to the issues of the non-technical customer.

4) Management Experience

Anyone with management experience at any level has dealt with decision makers. They may even have been a decision maker themself. In any form of promotion, you need to appeal to the decision maker. Your IT copywriter needs to develop an understanding of the needs, influences, pressures, problems, work environment, and constraints of your typical decision maker(s). The more understanding your IT copywriter brings to the relationship, the less time youll spend schooling them.

5) Marketing Experience

Actual marketing experience is a big plus. It brings with it a broader understanding of strategic marketing and the realities of working with a range of challenging people and evolving products and services. Look for an IT copywriter with corporate experience as a marketing manager or marketing coordinator, or someone who runs a copywriting business with a heavy marketing focus.

6) Testimonials

Anyone can call themselves an IT copywriter; few have the client testimonials to prove it. Testimonials are a great way to validate your IT copywriters claims. Ask to see some and read them carefully. Dont just look at the company name and logo. You need to determine if the clients words back up the copywriters claims. And make sure the testimonial relates to the type of work youre commissioning (or something with similar requirements).

7) IT Samples

The proof is in the pudding. ALWAYS ask potential IT copywriters to send you samples of their work. And as with testimonials dont be fooled by flashy packaging, big names, and recognisable logos. Read the words. Are they relevant to your project? Do they convey a clear understanding of the subject matter? Do they convey benefits or just features? Are they written in a style that you find easy to read, yet compelling? And after youve read the words, double-check exactly how much input the copywriter had in their writing. Not all copy is written from scratch. Some copywriters work in teams, and others do more editing than writing. Make sure you get a clear understanding of your IT copywriters abilities and experience before commissioning them.

8) Understand Benefits

Your customers arent interested in what you do; theyre interested in what you can do FOR THEM. In other words, theyre interested in what benefits your product or service will deliver. How will it make their day easier, more enjoyable, less stressful, safer, or more profitable? Identifying benefits is one of the hardest tasks in any advertising project. In fact, many people rely on their copywriter to help them uncover the most compelling benefits. Does your IT copywriter truly understand the benefits youre promoting?

9) Contributes value

A good IT copywriter should have solid professional experience. They should bring value to your marketing push which goes far beyond the written word. Strategy, tactics, imagery, contacts, anecdotes, corporate identity Your IT copywriter must bring more to the table than grammar and punctuation. Expect them to make suggestions, not simply take notes and say Yes.

10) Plus all the normal copywriter requirements

Of course, your IT copywriter must be able to satisfy all the normal copywriter requirements. Ask for a contract of works to be completed, a time estimate, a plan of attack, a CV, and SEO copy skills (if search engine presence is important to you). For more information about what to expect from a normal copywriter, see http://www.divinewrite.com/websitecopywriter.htm.

Conclusion

Traditionally, copywriters have been seen as a small cog in the big advertising machine. As a result, most copywriters have risen through the ranks of generic advertising agencies. These days, however, more and more people are sidestepping the agency and going direct to the copywriter. This approach gives them consistency across all of their written collateral, more compelling and engaging copy, and more responsive service. Within the industry, this change means that copywriters arent confined to ad agencies, and are able to specialise. The end result to you? While finding a good IT copywriter with an IT background is still a big challenge, its certainly becoming easier. You simply need to take the time to ask the right questions.

Good luck.
