Syria regime claims rebel chemical attack kills 25

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria's state-run news agency says 25 people have been killed in an alleged rebel chemical attack in northern Syria.

Rebels in northern Syria deny the government claim and blamed regime forces for Tuesday's missile attack on Khan al-Assad village in northern Aleppo province.

SANA says 86 people were wounded, some in critical condition. It published pictures showing casualties, including children, on stretchers in what appears to be a hospital ward.

They say victims were taken to a hospital in a government-controlled area in Aleppo.

Report: Bribery probe targets Microsoft partners

(AP) ? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that U.S. government regulators are investigating allegations that some of Microsoft's partners resorted to bribery to help sell software in China, Romania and Italy.

Microsoft Corp. responded to Tuesday's report with a blog post saying it's appropriate for the company and the government to review the issues laid out in the Journal's story. The Redmond, Wash., software maker says it will cooperate in any investigation, but declined to further comment about reported probe.

The Journal's report cited anonymous people familiar with the matter. The report emphasized the inquiry is still in a preliminary phase that hasn't yet produced accusations of wrongdoing at Microsoft Corp. or any of its 640,000 business partners.

The investigation is looking for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Docs say keep trained eye on possible concussions

(AP) ? When athletes are suspected of having a concussion, they should be taken out of action immediately, new guidelines from a major medical group say.

The American Academy of Neurology said athletes shouldn't resume playing until they've been fully evaluated and cleared by a doctor or other professional with concussion expertise.

The recommendations issued Monday generally agree with a brief position paper the academy issued in 2010, but add details on evaluation and management. The guidelines are based on a comprehensive review of scientific research.

Sports concussions have gained a new public focus in recent years because of concern over the risk of developing long-term mental impairment. Thousands of former pro football players are suing the NFL and its teams, saying that for years the NFL did not do enough to protect players from concussions.

The new advice replaces guidelines published 15 years ago. Those recommended grading the severity of concussions at the time of injury to determine possible time frames for return to play. Now the group emphasizes more individualized assessment and management of the injury.

Research showed the grading system didn't relate to outcome, and that nobody can predict how long recovery will take, explained Dr. Christopher Giza of the University of California, Los Angeles, an author of the new guidelines.

The new document says athletes should not be allowed back in action if they show any symptoms. And it says athletes of high school age or younger with a diagnosed concussion should be managed more conservatively than older athletes when it comes to allowing a return to play.

Dr. David Dodick, a concussion expert at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix who was familiar with highlights of the new document, said they contain "no great revelations" beyond what experts know already. He noted that the guidelines state that the first 10 days after a concussion are the period of highest risk for being diagnosed with a second concussion, and that younger athletes take longer to recover from the injury.

Since getting a second concussion before the first is healed can lead to a long period of disabling symptoms, that is good guidance for doctors who have to decide when young athletes can return to play, he said in a telephone interview.

Real estate investor buys $16.5M Venoco HQ in Carpinteria | Pacific ...

By Staff Report on March 18, 2013.

A South Coast investor has purchased Venoco?s 50,955-square-foot headquarters building in Carpinteria.

The property at 6267 Carpinteria Ave. was purchased by real estate investor Victor Schaff for an undisclosed amount. The property was listed by Hayes Commercial Group for $16.5 million.

Denver-based oil and gas company Venoco has leased the glass-and-steel building, which sits on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, since 2004. Hayes Commercial said the property was sold as a triple-net leased investment, with Venoco executing a 10-year lease extension.

The commercial real estate firm said the deal represented the highest-value office property ever sold in Carpinteria and that Schaff is the largest owner of office properties in Carpinteria.

Greg Bartholomew, Stephen Hayes and Francois DeJohn of Hayes Commercial Group represented the seller. Bob Tuler, Paul Gamberdella and Gene Deering of Radius Commercial Real Estate & Investments represented the buyer in the deal negotiations.

?Adding this unique office building to my portfolio speaks of my great confidence in the Carpinteria and South Coast office market,? Schaff said in a statement. ?I?m very pleased to have Venoco staying on as a long-term tenant in Carpinteria.?

In a news release, Bartholomew noted that investors from around the country expressed interest in the property.

Hacker Challenge Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key Cards

Hacker Challenge Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key CardsIn last week's Hacker Challenge, we asked you to share your best hotel room hack. We received some great entries, but the winning hack shows us some clever ways to automate a hotel room.

Check out the description of the winning entry below and read about some of our other favorite entries.

Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key Cards

Hacker Challenge Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key CardsAshwin travels for work all the time, so he has acquired a bunch of spare NFC hotel keys. He uses the Android app NFC ReTag to repurpose those keys into NFC tags that he can use to control his rooted, NFC-enabled phone. Root is required to control certain phone functions like Airplane Mode and GPS.

In Ahswin's own words:

I usually place at least 2-3 tags (keys) in the hotel room I stay in. The first tag goes by the night stand to use before sleep. That tag turns off Bluetooth, GPS, dims the screen, and then makes sure my alarm is set for the next morning. Another tag goes by the door and I swipe it before starting my day. I've also at times placed one in the bathroom to quickly enable Wifi, turn volume up, and launch Pandora while I get ready for work.

Honorable Mentions

We got a lot of great entries and we'd be remiss if we didn't share some of our favorites. Here are some of the entries that really impressed us.

Hacker Challenge Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key Cards

Open a Bottle

Charlie reminds us that there's no need to damage expensive hotel furniture trying to open a bottle. Most hotels have a built-in solution attached right to the door.

Test Your Room Card Before Heading to Your Room

Greg suggests a great way to avoid getting to your room and only then discovering that your keycard doesn't work. Test it by opening the business center door first. Hotels that provide these usually place them near the lobby.

Turn Your Ironing Board Into a Standing Desk

Hacker Challenge Winner: Automate Your Phone With Old Hotel Key CardsWith so many articles in his news feed reminding him that he should be standing and moving more, Ryan was looking for a way to reduce the amount of sitting he was doing for his consulting job. Sitting in cabs, planes, offices, and hotel rooms was taking its toll. So he converts the ironing board found in most hotel rooms into a standing desk. Here's to your health, Ryan!

Use a Google Voice Number on Your Luggage Tags

LaurelNevans has a beautifully simple suggestion for us?use a Google Voice number on your luggage tags. You can forward that number to your cell phone, a local hotel phone, and even the office where you'll be working. This helps ensure that the people who have your lost luggage have the best chance at tracking you down.

Bring Binder Clips With You On Your Travels

Noah reminds us that we should always bring a few binder clips with us whenever we're staying in a hotel. In his words:

These engineering gems are cheap, small, and have dozens of uses. Some of these include:

  • Maximizing your shades and curtains in your room to keep is dark.
  • Making a simple drying rack for small items, using a binder clip and a hangar.
  • Making a "private" room for a kid or a baby. Or when a work colleague when your company is cheap.
  • Keeping your charging cords visible so you don't forget them upon exit.
  • As weights for nice shirts, to minimize ironing.
  • Clipping to your key, then the "do not disturb"'sign, so you always know where it is.
  • Clipping to the coffee sacks to hang up make a stale room smell homier.
  • Marking your towel, so others know which not to use.
  • And they pack well, inside the flaps of your bags.

A big thanks to everyone who took the time to send us entries! Be sure to check back every week for a new challenge.

Obama expected to nominate Perez for Labor post

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A person familiar with White House deliberations says President Barack Obama on Monday will nominate Justice Department official Thomas Perez to head the Labor Department.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

Perez has headed the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division since 2009 and would be the first Hispanic chosen for Obama's second-term cabinet.

He has strong support from Latino and labor groups, but could face opposition from Republicans who say his tenure at Justice has been guided too much by political ideology. If confirmed, he would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January to return to her native California.

Perez previously served as Maryland's labor secretary.

EU markets rise for fourth week due to national debt sales

European stocks advanced for a fourth week, the longest winning streak in almost three months, as the region?s leaders eased constraints on national budgets and US retail sales and jobless benefit claims pointed to a recovery in the world?s biggest economy.

The STOXX Europe 600 Index gained 0.7 percent to 297.46 this past week. The gauge slipped 0.4 percent on Friday, retreating from the highest level since June 2008. Spain sold 803 million euros (US$1.05 billion) of debt at an extraordinary auction on Thursday and Italy issued 6.99 billion euros of securities the previous day. Ireland sold its first 10-year bond since receiving a EU-led bailout three years ago.

?The key driver is still of course the international monetary policy from central banks,? Kliegel & Hafner AG senior market strategist Andreas Lipkow said.

The STOXX 600 surged 6.4 percent this year as US politicians agreed on a compromise budget and the US Federal Reserve Thursday, the Standard & Poor?s 500 Index of US shares climbed to within two points of its 1,565.15 record close set in October 2007.

EU leaders meeting in Brussels endorsed ?structural? budgetary assessments, using code for granting countries such as France, Spain and Portugal extra time to bring down deficits. Still, balanced budgets remained the goal and there was no talk of large-scale spending programs.

In the US, applications for jobless benefits unexpectedly dropped to the lowest level in almost two months in the week ended on March 9. Retail sales and industrial production rose more than forecast last month, separate reports showed.

National benchmark indices climbed in in 12 of the 18 Western European markets. Germany?s DAX rallied 0.7 percent, while France?s CAC 40 and the UK?s FTSE 100 added 0.1 percent. The Swiss Market Index advanced 1.5 percent to the highest level since January 2008.

A gauge of insurers was the best performer among the 19 industry groups in the STOXX 600, gaining 2.4 percent. The insurers were led by the UK?s Prudential PLC, which rallied 14 percent, the biggest gain in 15 months.

New Mexico Legislature adjourns, OKs tax bill

Posted at: 03/16/2013 12:11 PM
By: The Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Legislature has approved a last-minute package of business tax cuts to encourage economic development.

The tax measure won final approval in the final minute of the session as the House adopted a plan that was rushed through the Senate.

The measure would lower corporate income tax rates, but could force the state's larger cities and counties to raise taxes or face a loss in revenue in the future.

Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has made tax cuts for economic development a centerpiece of her legislative agenda.

Failing upon adjournment was a proposal to expand background checks of people buying firearms from private sellers at gun shows.

The Senate debated the measure but it died as opponents offered repeated amendments until time ran out.

Pope Francis: A prelate who has preached against 'huge inequities'

The first pope from Latin America has highlighted in recent years the region's yawning gap between rich and poor.?

The next leader of the Roman Catholic church combines a Jesuit intellectual mind with a life spent advocating for social justice and the poor, and in 2009 he made headlines for criticizing the government of Argentina for allowing ?huge inequities? between the rich and the poor to develop.

After only five rounds of votes in the Sistine Chapel and at roughly 8:30 tonight, the phrase "Habemus Papam" or ?We have a pope,? was spoken on the plaza balcony in Vatican City ??and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina appeared, dressed in white, to say the Lord?s Prayer.

The man that believing Roman Catholics call the ?successor? of the apostle Peter, and ?the vicar of Christ? will go by the name of Pope Francis. He speaks three languages, and is both the first non-European pope in modern times and the first from a developing country.

Mr. Bergoglio was elected in a swift five votes of a conclave of 115 cardinals.

According to John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter, Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires in 1936 to an Italian immigrant family. He was educated as a theologian in Germany, cooks his own meals, and?eschews the ornate trappings of church power ? he travels by bus. He became?widely known for his analysis of the negative effect of globalization on parts of the developing world. At the same time, he opposed the once-powerful liberation theology movement that previous popes denounced as flirting with Marxism.

At a gathering of Latin American bishops in 2007, Bergoglio offered that,?"We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least. The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers."

Like his predecessor Pope Benedict, who resigned last month ? the first head of the Catholic church to do so in 600 years ? Pope Francis is said to be a strict conservative on personal morality. He has opposed Argentina?s gay marriage laws, and has been fiercely pro-family.?In church terms, though, he is seen as a master conciliator who will be adroit at healing many of the rifts and scandals over finances and pedophile priests that have dogged the Vatican in recent years.

Since 1998 he has been the Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

The conclave appeared to steer away from popular choices like the cardinals of New York and Boston, Timothy Dolan and Sean O?Malley, as well as the local Italian favorite Angelo Scola.

Bergoglio was elected by a conclave that overwhelmingly shares the conservative views of Benedict, who has held sway as an enforcer of orthodoxy in the Vatican since 1982.

As Mr. Allen of the National Catholic Reporter writes, ?Either John Paul II or Benedict XVI appointed each of the ... cardinals who will cast a ballot, including 11 Americans, so there will be little ideological clash. No matter what happens,?the church almost certainly won't reverse its bans on abortion, gay marriage or women priests.?

Self Defense: The Psychology of Attack and Survival (How To Defend Yourself and Survive In Any Dangerous Situation) (Self Defense Psychology)Self Defense: The Psychology of Attack and Survival (How To Defend Yourself and Survive In Any Dangerous Situation) (Self Defense Psychology)Self defense isn?t about carrying around a gun or mace or weapons. It?s not about being bigger or stronger than others. It?s not about what you look like, whether you?re a man or a woman or how old you are.

At the end of the day, the you will survive because your mind and body are strong and united. We?ve all heard stories of super-human strength ? the grandma who lifted up with her bare hands to save her grandson and other such stories abound.

But the same thing can happen mentally ? at times of great stress, you can acquire super-human mental powers as well as physical. Like the lady who is mugged at gunpoint and says something that spooks the robber. He runs away, dropping her purse, and the woman picks it up and walks off like nothing happened.

How do we access our super-human potential when we need it most?

How can you fight off four assailants at once?

How can you talk your way out of being robbed?

How can you protect yourself and your family when something goes wrong?

These questions haunted me for years. I would often lay awake at night or daydream about potential fights or conflicts. Some guy at the bar comes at me with a knife so I use a typical Aikido move to disarm him and throw him on the ground using his own force. I get jumped from behind in an alleyway and knocked on the ground... the scenarios played through my head over and over like a moviescreen. Only this wasn?t the movies. It wasn?t real either ? it was practice.

And that practice payed off ? in a big way.

I want this book to prepare you for what may lie ahead. No one knows what the future holds. But even if you never have to face an attack or serious bodily harm for the rest of your life, this book will prepare you mentally and physically for when times get tough.

Life isn?t about being bigger, stronger, fast or smarter than the competition. Life is about survival. It?s about freedom, confidence and success. This book will give you the tools and the confidence to know that you will survive no matter what happens.

NY AG: NFL must ban sexual orientation inquiries

By MICHAEL GORMLEY

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:58 p.m. ET March 14, 2013

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman urged the NFL on Thursday to investigate whether possible draft picks were improperly asked about their sexual orientation during the league's combine, which he said would be illegal in New York.

"We ask that the league immediately issue a statement that any form of discrimination or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation by league teams or players against potential recruits or players constitutes a violation of state, local and, in some cases, contractor law and will not be tolerated," Schneiderman said in a letter dated Thursday and released to news organizations.

Schneiderman asked NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to call him by next Wednesday to schedule a meeting on the matter.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league was already looking into the issue and would discuss it at its meeting next week in Phoenix.

"Like all employers, our teams are expected to follow applicable federal, state and local employment laws," the NFL said in a Feb. 27 statement. "It is league policy to neither consider nor inquire about sexual orientation in the hiring process. In addition, there are specific protections in our collective bargaining agreement with the players that prohibit discrimination against any player, including on the basis of sexual orientation."

It concluded: "Any team or employee that inquires about impermissible subjects or makes an employment decision based on such factors is subject to league discipline."

Last month, Colorado tight end Nick Kasa told ESPN Radio in Denver that during interviews with team officials at the combine in Indianapolis: "(Teams) ask you, like, `Do you have a girlfriend?' `Are you married?' `Do you like girls?"'

He did not identify who asked him.

Since then, Michigan's Denard Robinson and Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell each have indicated in radio interviews that they were asked similar questions.

Schneiderman reminded Goodell that discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal in New York and in at least 23 other states where the NFL's 32 teams are based.

In February, DeMaurice Smith, the head of the NFL players association, said in a statement that, "I know that the NFL agrees that these types of questions violate the law, our CBA and player rights."

McGraw-Hill Education brings gaming to the college curriculum ...

When I was in college, if one of my professors had told me to go back to my dorm room and play a video game for homework, I might have never wanted to graduate so I could just keep on learning through playing great games. But for many college students today, that ultimate gamer?s dream is becoming more and more of a reality, as educators and learning institutions of all levels are recognizing the power that gaming has to teach younger people about difficult concepts and important life skills.

To continue the growing trend of hands-on learning through engagement, McGraw-Hill Education has announced Government in Action, one of the industry?s first 3D online multiplayer educational games geared towards college students. Developed in conjunction with Muzzy Lane, Government in Action lets students assume the role of a U.S. congressperson, and apply real-life concepts they?ve been learning in their American Government course within a simulation setting. In the game, students are tasked with securing the most political capital, and both collaborating and competing with other classmates online in their quest for reelection. In addition to Government in Action, the McGraw-Hill Practice suite also includes experimental learning games Practice Marketing and Practice Operations,for students in marketing and operations management disciplines.

I recently had the chance to conduct an email interview with Matt Busbridge, the director of products and markets for the social sciences at McGraw-Hill Higher Education and product team leader for Government in Action, where I was able to ask him a few questions about the ambitious new project. You can read what Matt had to say about Government in Action below, and if you want to learn a little bit about how the U.S. government works on your own, you won?t even need to enroll in the nearest American Government class to give Government in Action a try!

A free demo of the game can be played right now at www.mhpractice.com, and if you like what you see, you can purchase the full version from the McGraw-Hill store. If only I had a game like this when I was in school!

?

Gamezebo: Your game features a really neat concept, in which American Government students play the role of U.S. Congress members and try to maximize their Political Capital. Walk me through a typical game year in Government in Action for players seeking re-election to U.S. Congress. What kinds of tasks and challenges can students expect?

Matt Busbridge: Students ? who are competing in the game as members of U.S. Congress ? build up their political capital by raising their awareness, approval and influence on policy with an ultimate goal of being re-elected. In order to accomplish this, they can propose bills, hire lobbyists, engage national and local media, raise funds from donors, hire staff and volunteers, hold rallies and town-halls, and compete against other students. They have to do all of this while positioning themselves for re-election in a local district which has a competing candidate and a variety of ideological issues. Ultimately, students in American Government courses learn how multiple facets of government work together.

?

Gamezebo: What has been the overall response to the Government in Action game by American Government course instructors? Did any instructors show signs of resistance towards teaching with a video game aide?

MB: American Government instructors have been asking us for a game like this for a long time and many are already big gamers ? we?ve received tremendous support for Government in Action from faculty across the country who look to engage their students in how government works, create more meaningful and rich class discussions and develop a deeper understanding of the course for their students.

?

Gamezebo: How is the game expected to be incorporated into the curriculum by instructors? Will students play the game together in class? Or will they play it periodically on their own after class, as in a homework assignment or long-term project?

MB: We?ve seen faculty use this in a variety ways: in and out of class, for a week or even for a full semester. It is highly flexible and can work differently depending on the instructor?s preference. We?ve seen improvement in an understanding of government in students who play the game multiple times over the course of the semester because their understanding develops the more they play the game.

?

news

?

Gamezebo: You mention that one of your goals with Government in Action is to reinforce learning while increasing engagement. What do you think are some other important life skills that young people can learn by playing video games?

MB: The fundamental goal of Government in Action is to develop students? critical thinking and analysis skills while giving students an understanding of how government works at the same time. Both of these skills are developed playing many different kinds of video games and are important life skills for all of us.

?

Gamezebo: The MH Practice suite also includes Practice Marketing and Practice Operations for students in other disciplines. What other kinds of educational games can we expect to see from McGraw-Hill Education in the future?

MB: We?ve been very satisfied with the reaction to Government in Action and the other games in the MH Practice suite so far, and we?re currently exploring the possibilities of expanding our suite of Practice Games into multiple course areas ? stay tuned!

?

Gamezebo: Is there anything else you?d like the Gamezebo audience to know about Government in Action?

MB: This is our first entry into the market for higher education games, and it?s also a first in the American Government course (which over 750,000 students take each year). We?re excited to engage with the gaming community as our own business continues to evolve and are looking forward to helping students in American Government (and other courses in higher education) succeed through gaming!

?

Gamezebo: Thanks so much for your time! One final question: since we love talking about games here at Gamezebo, are you a gamer yourself? If so, what are some of your favorite games to play?

MB: Personally, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NHL are two current favorites but I spent much of my college years playing Hitman and SimCity!

Thanks again to Matt Busbridge and McGraw-Hill Education for their time, and be sure to let us know what you think of Government in Action and higher education gaming in the replies!

White House launches 'Being Biden' audio series

Ever wonder what goes through Vice President Joe Biden's head? The White House has just launched an audio series called "Being Biden," where the vice president will share his story of a photograph in which he appears.

The first picture featured in the series is of Biden's serving rolls at a wild game dinner in Delaware earlier this month. The vice president is shaking hands with a man wearing a hunting-style shirt featuring deer in the woods as Biden carries a tong in his other hand.

"Hey folks, I want to tell you about this picture you're looking at," Biden said about the picture. "These are a couple of guys in their hunting shirts that I'm serving a meal to, along with the folks you see in the back gourd and the occasion is once a year the Whitehall Neck Sportsman Club holds a dinner.

"I've been attending it for over 30 years. It's called a wild game dinner and they go out and they hunt for wild game that they then cook up and serve at the Leipsic fire hall, as you see in the background and all the money goes to charity and then there's an auction and they auction off guns and bows and all that money as well goes to originally went to [defray] the costs and expenses of a buddy of theirs who was injured in a hunting accident years ago and now it goes to help people in need."

Biden then detailed how important the right to bear arms responsibly is to himself and hunters.

"They believe there is a Second Amendment right to own a weapon. So do I, but they also believe that it's for self protection and legitimate uses like hunting and these guys have the ethic, an ethic that I find most sportsmen have, one that demands responsibility in terms of their case how you deal with, treat, and store your weapons, and there's an ethic that they have that says we're going to help those in our community who are in need," Biden said. "I know these guys, and I know an awful lot of them. I've been doing it for over 30 years. They're my friends, but the point is they are absolutely, totally responsible."

The vice president noted that today marks three months since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut and urged Congress to pass gun legislation to help prevent such a tragedy in the future.

"This is the third-month anniversary of those twenty beautiful little babies who were massacred up in Connecticut in Sandy Hook and those six brave teachers and administrators that tried to protect them. And the country cries for responsible action, to do everything we can to see to it that these kinds of events don't happen again," he said.

"I'm pleased to say the Judiciary Committee, that's the committee in the United States Senate has passed out the major elements of what we've proposed. They've passed out a gun-trafficking piece of legislation, a universal background check piece, a school safety piece, and I think they're going to do more," Biden said.

"I think it's time the United States Congress act responsibly now and seriously debate the pieces of legislation we've talked about so that we can get to a position where we actually make our communities safer for our children, make our schools safer, and make society safer."

Mark Kelly's purchase of rifle draws criticism

(AP) ? The husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords generated nearly 4,000 comments on Facebook from people on both sides of the gun debate after he posted a photo of himself buying a military-style rifle ? a purchase he said he made to demonstrate how easy it is to obtain the kind of firearms he's lobbying Congress to ban.

A background check took only a matter of minutes to complete, Mark Kelly said in the Facebook post, adding that it's scary to think people can buy similar guns without background checks at gun shows or on the Internet.

It didn't take long for gun-rights supporters to accuse Kelly of being a hypocrite for buying an AR-15-style rifle and a 45.-caliber handgun. Many of the Facebook comments focused on his motivations and the rules for purchasing such guns.

Kelly and Giffords started a gun control advocacy group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, amid the wave of recent mass shootings. They have been touring the country in recent months in support of expanded background checks for gun purchases.

Kelly bought the guns at a Tucson shop the day before he appeared with his wife at the supermarket where she was wounded during a shooting rampage that left six dead and 12 others wounded two years ago.

The public event last week was the first time the survivors had come together since the January 2011 shooting.

Giffords resigned from Congress last year as she continues to recover from her injuries.

The AR-15 is among 157 military-style weapons that would be banned under a bill pending before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Kelly, a former astronaut, said he intends to eventually hand in the rifle to Tucson police.

Doug MacKinlay is the owner of Diamondback Police Supply, the shop where Kelly bought the guns. He said Kelly bought the rifle on March 5 but couldn't immediately take possession of it because the shop had bought it from a customer. As a result, the store is required by a Tucson ordinance to hold the gun for 20 days to give the city enough time to make sure the weapon wasn't used in a crime, MacKinlay said.

MacKinlay said Kelly never revealed to the store's staff why he was buying the guns and added that it would be wrong to refuse to sell a gun to someone because of their personal views.

"He is a U.S. citizen, an Arizona citizen and expressing his Second Amendment right to purchase and own a firearm," MacKinlay said.

Todd Rathner, a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association's affiliate in Arizona and a national NRA board member, questioned the point that Kelly was trying to make in buying the guns, saying a model citizen such as Kelly should be able to buy a gun relatively quickly. He also noted that such a purchase could have been a good investment as the value of those types of weapon soars amid heightened demand from gun owners.

"If you believe him, it's a cheap publicity stunt," Rathner said. "If you don't, then he was speculating on the value of the rifle because he knew the prices would be inflated."

The advocacy group started by Giffords and Kelly had no immediate comment Tuesday on Kelly's gun buys.

But the group released a statement from Kelly on the Senate Judiciary Committee's approval Tuesday of a proposal to expand federal firearms background checks to nearly all gun purchases. Kelly said the 10-8 vote was a huge step in keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally ill people. Kelly's statement didn't address the controversy over his own gun buys.

Kelly, a former astronaut who plans to keep the handgun, told CNN on Monday that it was important for him to have firsthand information on the ease of buying guns such as the AR-15 and that he looks forward to buying a firearm at a gun show in the future. Kelly and Giffords have long been supporters of gun rights and owned handguns themselves.

ATHENS, Ohio (March 13, 2013)Dwelling on negative events can increase levels of inflammation in the body, a new Ohio University study finds. Researchers discovered that when study participants were asked to ruminate on a stressful incident, their levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of tissue inflammation, rose. The study is the first time to directly measure this effect in the body.

"Much of the past work has looked at this in non-experimental designs. Researchers have asked people to report their tendency to ruminate, and then looked to see if it connected to physiological issues. It's been correlational for the most part," said Peggy Zoccola, an assistant professor of psychology at Ohio University.

Zoccola is lead author on the new study, which she will present Friday at the annual meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society in Miami, Fla.

The research team recruited 34 healthy young women to participate in the project. Each woman was asked to give a speech about her candidacy for a job to two interviewers in white laboratory coats, who listened with stone-faced expressions, Zoccola said.

Half of the group was asked to contemplate their performance in the public speaking task, while the other half was asked to think about neutral images and activities, such as sailing ships or grocery store trips.

The researchers drew blood samples that showed that the levels of C-reactive protein were significantly higher in the subjects who were asked to dwell on the speech, Zoccola reported.

For these participants, the levels of the inflammatory marker continued to rise for at least one hour after the speech. During the same time period, the marker returned to starting levels in the subjects who had been asked to focus on other thoughts.

The C-reactive protein is primarily produced by the liver as part of the immune system's initial inflammatory response. It rises in response to traumas, injuries or infections in the body, Zoccola explained.

C-reative protein is widely used as a clinical marker to determine if a patient has an infection, but also if he or she may be at risk for disease later in life.

"More and more, chronic inflammation is being associated with various disorders and conditions," Zoccola said. "The immune system plays an important role in various cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, as well as cancer, dementia and autoimmune diseases."

Zoccola is working with Fabian Benencia in Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and Lauren Mente, a registered nurse and graduate student in the School of Nursing, to investigate the effect of rumination on additional inflammation markers. In addition, she hopes to study the issue in other populations, such as older adults, who might be vulnerable to rumination and health problems.

PFT: Chiefs trying to trade Cassel, might cut him

pg2_g_polian_300Getty Images

Two days ago, former NFL General Manager Bill Polian said he didn?t think running back Reggie Bush was worth much in free agency. Today, after Bush signed with the Lions, Polian changed his tune.

Appearing on ESPN?s NFL Live, Polian was asked which of today?s free agent signings he liked the best, and he said Bush to Detroit will be a game changer.

?I like the Reggie Bush,? Polian said. ?And what it tells you is they?re going to be the Greatest Show on Turf. Think Marshall Faulk ? because that?s the kind of back he really is.?

Polian, of course, is the man who traded Faulk from Indianapolis to St. Louis and allowed the Rams to build the Greatest Show on Turf offense. It?s a little strange to hear Polian use a player he traded away as the basis for comparison when singing the praises of another player whose value Polian was just minimizing two days ago. But it got even stranger.

Two days ago, Polian said of Bush, ?He?s not a three-down back anymore. He?s got seven years in, that?s a lot of shelf life for a running back. He?s had injuries. He?s not a great blocker.?

Today, Polian said of Bush, ?He?ll be a three-down back, there?s no two ways about it, because he can come out of the backfield in that spread that they use any time, and a quarterback will find him. He can run those choice routes. He can run the draw. He can do all of those things and he adds explosion to an offense that already had some.?

Why did Polian change his tune? Who knows? But Lions fans will have to hope Bill Polian on Wednesday was right, and Bill Polian on Monday was wrong.

Taxation without representation is tyranny. ~?James Otis?(1725-1783) American lawyer

Men and boys are discriminated against in many ways in modern democracies. The institutions which are most responsible for those discriminations are state-run institutions, an extraordinary state of affairs in countries where politicians are elected by the popular vote. This begs the question, what proportion of the tax revenues which finance the state is paid by men? Leaving aside the issue of corporation tax, which is overwhelmingly paid by corporations which are the inventions of men and still largely run by men, what about income tax?

A month ago I made a Freedom of Information Act request to Her Majesty?s Revenue & Customs (?HMRC?):

In the latest tax year for which figures are available, what were the collective income tax liabilities of (a) men, and (b) women?

Yesterday I received the answer, in the form of a letter written by a woman at HMRC. It was sent as an email attachment, charmingly titled ?1219 Buchanan?. The key piece of information for the purpose of this article was a link to an analysis of income and income tax in 2010/11:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/statistics/income-by-year/table3-3.xls

So, what does this table tell us? A top-level view:

Progressive income tax rates adversely affect far more men than women. To illustrate the point, let?s look at the incomes and income tax liabilities in the ?50,000 ? ?70,000 band. After decades of women entering the workplace in considerable numbers, and flooding into male-typical fields of employment ? particularly fields which are well-paid, low-risk, in safe surroundings, public sector, and with ?human interest?, such as medicine ? British women collectively pay just 28.8% of the government?s income tax revenues which largely finance the state which preferences women throughout their lives.

It?s often said that women?s lesser participation in the workplace is largely attributable to women staying at home to look after young children, but the impact of this factor is far lower than is commonly supposed. For one thing, few women experience more than a decade of looking after young children, in a potential working life of nearly 50 years. In The Glass Ceiling Delusion I cited official data showing that women are markedly less likely than men to engage in paid employment, and markedly more likely than men to work only part-time, throughout their potential working lives. This shouldn?t surprise us. It?s ?real world? support for a theory published in 2000 by the renowned sociologist Catherine Hakim, Preference Theory. A summary here:

http://c4mb.wordpress.com/2012/07/19/dr-catherine-hakims-preference-theory/

Dr Hakim?s research uncovered the startling fact that while four in seven British men of working age are ?work-centred?, just one in seven British women is. Women might say they want equality of outcomes, but the stark fact is that ? with a few notable exceptions ? they?re simply not prepared to put in the hard work required to reach that goal. So the state does all in its power to give them that equality, in exchange for their votes. We shouldn?t be surprised that in the modern age women show a marked preference (compared with men) to vote for left-wing parties.

What benefits do men get for collectively paying ?2.48 in income tax for every ?1.00 paid collectively by women? I?m not aware of a single area in which the state ? when it demonstrates favourable treatment for one gender over the other ? favours men over women. In return for paying 71.2% of the total income tax bill, men (and boys) get the following in return:

1. Boys are made ashamed of their natures by a highly feminised education system which plays to girls? relative strengths. For every two male undergraduates in British universities today, there are three female undergraduates;

2. Anti-male legislation, and poorer state provision of services compared with that enjoyed by women;

3. Men are increasingly being denied access to political office through all-women prospective parliamentary candidate shortlists;

4. There?s no ?Minister for Men?, while there?s a ?Minister for Women;

5. Men hold little more than one-third of public sector jobs, yet the Equality Act (2010) permits public sector bodies to favour women in their recruitment and promotion processes. For every three women registered as unemployed, four men are;

6. Men are being passed over for promotion in the private sector due to the government?s bullying of companies to increase the proportion of women in senior positions, despite the overwhelming evidence that corporate financial performance will decline as a result1

7. Men are obliged ? through their taxes ? to finance women?s ?choice? to have children when those women otherwise wouldn?t have the financial means to support them;

8. Men are obliged to financially support children when women cause contraceptive methods to fail, primarily by ?forgetting? to take their contraceptive pills;

9. Men are economic impoverished by sometimes savage divorce settlements, regardless of the proportion of the couple?s joint wealth which was inherited or earned by the men;

10. Men are denied access to their children following relationship breakdowns, because the justice system won?t enforce contact orders;

11. Men are assumed by the police and justice system to be solely responsible for domestic abuse/violence, if their partners claim they are;

12. Men receive virtually no support when they suffer domestic abuse/violence;

13. Paternity fraud. It?s believed that up to 30% of children in the UK are being supported financially by men who?ve been misled to believe they?re the children?s biological fathers. Paternity fraud is a criminal offence in the UK, yet not one woman has ever been convicted of the crime;

14. Men receive poorer provision of services aimed at early diagnosis of gender-specific life-threatening conditions;

15. Men face higher incarceration rates, and more onerous sentences, when convicted of the same crimes as women;

16. Men face ruin at the hands of spiteful women making false rape allegations, even if they?re cleared of the charges, due to the lack of anonymity for rape suspects;

17. Men represent the vast majority of former military personnel who suffer from physical and mental health problems, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. They often find the provision of support services to be poor;

18. Homeless men experience poor provision of support. The vast majority of homeless people are men, especially ?rough sleepers?;

19. There?s negligible state funding of initiatives to discourage men from committing suicide. The suicide rate among British men is around three and a half times higher than the suicide rate among women;

20. Men typically live 4-5 years less than women, but they must wait longer for their state pensions.

Let?s remind ourselves that British men collectively pay 71.2% of the government?s income tax revenues. How much more income tax do they pay, compared with women?

?64,400,000,000

For American readers, this equates to approximately

$100,000,000,000

It would be intriguing to learn the equivalent figure for other democracies.

You?d expect governments to treat men and boys better than they do, wouldn?t you? The prime objective of our new party Justice for Men & Boys (and the women who love them) will be to persuade British governments to start doing exactly that.

I?m finding the mass media ever more willing to give exposure to well-reasoned arguments. I?ve just contributed to a phone-in debate on a BBC Radio 4 programme, You and Yours, devoted to the topic of increasing the representation of women in the senior levels of business. I was given plenty of time to put my points across. On Thursday 14 March I?ll be appearing on Jeremy Vine?s BBC Radio 2 show, which regularly has audiences of more than six million listeners.
