As the new league year approaches, the Jets have, for now, one serious trade partner for cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it?s the Buccaneers.

The challenge becomes doing a deal that works for everyone involved ? the teams and the player.Some, including former Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, believe that Revis should bring in the same haul that the Vikings got for receiver Percy Harvin.? But there are major differences between the deals.

First, one playoff team in the NFC traded Harvin to another playoff team in the same conference.? To justify that deal, the compensation needed to be greater.

The Jets, by sending Revis to a team they?d only have to worry about in the postseason if they meet in the Super Bowl, are taking less of a competitive risk by shipping Revis to Tampa.

Second, and more importantly, Harvin had a year left on his deal and the Vikings could have used the franchise tag on him twice, before the salary would have become unwieldy.? Thus, the Vikings controlled Harvin for a total of three more years.

The Jets, in turn, have one more year with Revis.? Next March, he can walk away without the ability to use the franchise tag, per his contract.

Combined with the fact that the Jets have decided not to keep him beyond the 2013 season and the fact that he?s recovering from a torn ACL, Harvin actually is worth more in a trade than Revis.

At best, it?s a package headlined by a second-round pick this year or possibly a first-rounder in 2014.? Under these circumstances, a 2013 first-round pick for Revis doesn?t make sense.

For the Jets and Revis, the question now becomes whether they are willing to do the deal, before the opportunity dries up.? If the Bucs sign a player like, say, Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes once the market opens, the Bucs will lose interest in Revis ? and as of right now there?s no one else trying to get the deal done.

Obama cracks wise at annual Gridiron dinner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama blamed the budget battle if his jokes fell flat at Saturday night's Gridiron dinner: "My joke writers have been placed on furlough."

Always a target for digs, the president tossed out a few of his own during the Gridiron Club and Foundation dinner, an annual event where political leaders, journalists and media executives poke fun at each other.

The so-called sequester that struck the federal budget this month drew another observation from Obama: "Of course, there's one thing in Washington that didn't get cut ? the length of this dinner. Yet more proof that the sequester makes no sense."

The ambitions of 70-year-old Vice President Joe Biden? "Just the other day, I had to take Joe aside and say, 'Joe, you are way too young to be the pope. You can't do it. You got to mature a little bit.'"

During a pause in his remarks, Obama took a long, slow sip of water and then said, "That, Marco Rubio, is how you take a sip of water." Rubio took a much-discussed water break while delivering the televised GOP response to the State of the Union address last month.

Obama also mocked the criticism from some quarters that he takes time off from his job. "We face major challenges. March in particular is going to be full of tough decisions. But I want to assure you, I have my top advisers working around the clock. After all, my March Madness bracket isn't going to fill itself out. And don't worry ? there is an entire team in the Situation Room as we speak, planning my next golf outing, right now at this moment."

The dinner was the organization's 128th since its founding in 1885. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar represented the Democrats, while Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal cracked wise for the Republicans.

Klobuchar joked that Obama had aged in office. "His Secret Service name used to be 'Renegade,'" she said. "Now it's '50 Shades of Gray.'"

Jindal jabbed at Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, telling the audience that Romney had warned him that "47 percent of you can't take a joke." Referring to his own prospects for a presidential run, Jindal asked, "What chance does a skinny guy with a dark complexion have of being elected president?"

Political disputes and feuds between politicians and the news media provided plenty of fodder. There was Obama's sometimes frosty relationship with the news media, the internal struggles roiling the Republican Party, and journalist Bob Woodward's dustup with White House economic adviser Gene Sperling, who advised Woodward in an email that the veteran Watergate reporter would regret his reporting about the forced spending cuts called a sequester.

Welcoming the 650 attendees, Gridiron President Charles J. Lewis of Hearst Newspapers noted that the organization had promised to keep the evening short, "especially because Gene Sperling said that a late night is something we'd all regret."

With a nod to print reporters' complaints about dealing with the Obama administration, Lewis said he thought he'd overhead Obama say on the way to the dinner: "So many newspaper reporters. So many interviews to turn down."

Musical skits are a tradition at the Gridiron dinner. Using the Beatles song "When I'm 64," one skit featured a look at Hillary Rodham Clinton's future with the lyrics:

"Got a bit older/Growing my hair/Gained a pound or two

"Going home to vegetate in Chappaqua/ I just want to be a grandma

"It was more than a case of Benghazi flu/Still I'll be just fine

"Will you select me/Will you elect me/When I'm 69."

Noting the close relationship between the GOP and the National Rifle Association, Gridiron members sang a tune called "My Gun," a takeoff on the Temptations' "My Girl." The lyrics included:

"If you hate the NRA/Tell my Walther PPK

"You're flirting with disaster/With my Bushmaster

"And when pigs fly away/You can take me away

"From my gun."

The Gridiron Club and Foundation contributes to college scholarships and journalistic organizations. It limits active members to 65 journalists based in Washington.

Except for Grover Cleveland, every president since the Gridiron was founded has addressed it. The club is the oldest and most exclusive for Washington journalists. Its motto is, "Singe but never burn."

No TV cameras were allowed.

Porno-copyright trolls Prenda Law get hauled in front of a very angry ...

Popehat's Ken White attended a hearing in United States District Court Judge Otis D. Wright II's California courtroom. Judge Wright is the judge most likely to put a halt to the astounding shenanigans of the notorious porno-copyright trolls Prenda Law, who have been accused of lying to the court; blackmailing thousands of people with legal threats ("pay up or we'll file a lawsuit that will forever associate your name with pornography with an embarrassing title"); and, incredibly, stealing the identity of a humble caretaker and naming him the CEO of a semi-fictional company that allegedly hired the firm to make all those legal threats.

Judge Wright ordered all the parties to show up in his court yesterday -- the Prenda lawyers, the caretaker, defendants' lawyers, and more -- but not everyone obeyed his order. The main party in the courtroom was Brett Gibbs, a junior-seeming lawyer who appears to have been made bagman for a big con that he was only dimly aware of. White's writeup is somewhat sympathetic ("a young attorney out of his depth who fell in with the wrong crowd and made bad choices") but remember: he was a knowing part of a racket that terrorized thousands and thousands of people with what amounted to legal blackmail, where the demand came to "Guilty or innocent, you need to pay up or have your life ruined."

White is an excellent writer, and his account of the hearing is riveting. Now we're all waiting to hear what the judge's order will be. My guess is that it will go very badly for Prenda Law.

Brett Gibbs is in trouble. I buy him as a dupe here. Indeed, he admitted that "maybe" he felt duped. Yet though he pointed to Hansmeier and Steele as the decision-makers in this travesty, and disclaimed any knowledge of wrongdoing, he and his attorneys seemed oddly reluctant to throw Steele and Hansmeier all the way under the bus. It's more like he handed them a bus schedule and gave them a gentle shove in that general direction. Gibbs continued to argue that it wasn't clear until Cooper's testimony today that the Cooper signatures weren't genuine, a position that drew guffaws in the courtroom and an incredulous expression from Judge Wright. He and his attorneys seemed to want to suspend judgment about whether Prenda committed any misconduct at all -- a tactical error at this point, I think, and harmful to their credibility. The judge interrupted their closing arguing by asking pointedly whether a lawyer -- even if he is supervised by people out of state -- has an obligation to investigate facts himself. Ultimately, Judge Wright did not sound inclined to accept Gibbs' innocent stance.

Wright did not say, explicitly, what he would do about Steele, Hansmeier, Duffy, or the rest of the Prenda Law team. But when Pietz began laboriously to explain the basis for jurisdiction over each of them, Wright cut him short, suggesting that he found the evidence clear. (So, for the record, did I, given the evidence of Steele's contacts with California, Steele's and Hansmeier's supervision of Gibbs in California, and Duffy's substitution into cases in California and membership in the California bar. Their lack-of-jurisdiction argument is borderline frivolous.) I suspect, based on his comments, that Judge Wright will not let the consequences of this situation rest entirely on Gibbs' shoulders. What could he do? He could probably sanction the Prenda Law parties under his inherent authority based on their supervision of Gibbs. But I suspect Judge Wright will go further than that, with criminal referrals and messages to various state bars. There could also be further orders to show cause, or even bench warrants. Judge Wright didn't seem inclined to give them warning. But every indication is that they are in real legal peril.

There's been a lot of anticipation of today's hearing. The hearing lived up to it. It was a disastrous day for Prenda Law.

Minivan Jumps Curb Onto Sidewalk Tragically Killing A 16 Year Old ...

A tragic and fatal car accident?yesterday morning took the life of a 16 year old high school student and left five other pedestrians injured. The accident took place in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens near LaGuardia Community College. Witnesses report that the driver of a maroon Dodge Caravan lost control of the van, careened across two lanes of oncoming traffic and jumped up onto a sidewalk island located in the center of Thomson Avenue. The van finally came to rest after colliding into a tree. The teen who was killed, Tenzin Drudak, was reportedly on the sidewalk and was on his way to class at the High School of Applied Communication. This is a absolutely senseless loss of life, highlighting the serious conseques of motor vehicle accidents. The driver of the minivan, reported to be a man in his thirties, was removed from the scene to Elmhurst Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

This is a horrible tragedy, and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to all who knew and loved this young man. Exercising good judgment, the teen's high school is assembling a crisis team to lend support to his grieving classmates. The reason this minivan operator lost control of his vehicle has yet to emerge, and more facts will likely develop as time goes on. North Korea cuts off hotline with South Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has cut off a Red Cross hotline with South Korea as it escalates its war of words against Seoul and Washington in response to a military drill in the South and U.N. sanctions imposed for its recent nuclear test.

The North had threatened to cut off the hotline on March 11 if the United States and South Korea did not abandon their joint military exercise.

The Red Cross hotline is used to communicate between Seoul and Pyongyang which do not have diplomatic relations.

"We called at 9 a.m. and there was no response," a government official from South Korea said. The line is tested each day.

Pyongyang has also threatened to cut off a hotline with U.N. forces in South Korea, at the border "truce village" of Pammunjom.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen since the North conducted a third nuclear test on February 12, prompting new U.N. sanctions.

South Korea and U.S. forces are conducting large-scale military drills until the end of April, while the North is also gearing up for a massive state-wide military exercise.

North Korea has accused the United States of using the military drills in South Korea as a launch pad for a nuclear war and has threatened to scrap the armistice with Washington that ended hostilities in the 1950-53 Korean War.

The North has threatened a nuclear strike on the United States, but such a threat has been dismissed as rhetoric by analysts, as the North does not have the military capacity to reach the United States.

The North is viewed as more likely to stage some kind of attack along a disputed sea border, if it does anything at all, rather than risk a war with South Korea and the United States, which it would lose, according to most military assessments.
