Puerto Rican boxing champ Camacho brain dead after shooting

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Former three-time world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho is brain dead following a drive-by shooting in Puerto Rico, a doctor said on Thursday.

Relatives are expected to decide on Thursday whether to remove Camacho, 50, from life support, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Rio Piedras Medical Center in Puerto Rico.

Camacho "is clinically brain dead," Torres told reporters. "We have done all we can do."

Camacho was shot in the neck and face late on Tuesday when he sat in a parked car in Bayamon, a San Juan suburb. The driver was killed, and police have no motive for the shooting.

Camacho was hit in the jaw by a bullet that fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder.

Torres said Camacho was in a deep coma and unresponsive. Brain studies taken overnight were negative and the results were taken to a neurologist for a final determination.

Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, and other relatives were going to be updated about the former boxer's condition, Torres said.

Brunswick Restaurant's Name Ensares it in Legal Battle

A visit to the Web site of the Vegas club TAO (left)? shows hundreds of revelers dancing to loud techno music while scantily-clad dancers strut their stuff and hang from trapezes.? TAO Vegas is owned by TAO Licensing, of Delaware, which operates venues frequented by millions of people a year, including many celebrities.

TAO Vegas, according to Bloomberg Business Week, is the most successful restaurant in the U.S. and grosses close to $60 million a year.

Meanwhile, in the small college town Brunswick, TAO Restaurant (below right) seats 40 people and has been offering what it calls Pan-Asian style cuisine with a touch of Maine since it opened five months ago.

Taking a quick break from prepping lunch, co-owner and chef Cara Stadler explains that the name of restaurant was chosen by her Chinese grandfather.

"We were looking for a name and he told us about 'Taohuayuan," which is the old Chinese fable about man who finds paradise in a peach grove, and that is how we chose the name," she says. "So it's sort of reminiscent of we wanted to create a place where people could go to escape the rest of the world."

Tom Porter: "But you've not been able to escape the rest of the world have you?"

Cara? Stadler: "No."

TAO has had to defend its name in a trademark infringement lawsuit launched in October by TAO Licensing. Attorneys for TAO Licensing declined to comment for this story, but according to their complaint, the TAO venues are "well-known for the quality of their food, service, and atmosphere."

The claim is that by using the same name, the Brunswick venue is trading on that goodwill, and attracting customers who may be misled.? TAO'S owners reject that? idea as absurd.? Cecile Stadler is Cara's mother, and the restaurant's other co-owner.? She says that although the name uses the same letters in English translation, the two TAOs are very different.

"We like the name and we like the connotation of it, and it's not at all the same word, the same character, the same concept as the restaurants, or the nightclubs in Las Vegas and New York," Cecile Stadler says.

The other TAO, she says, uses a different character and means "way" or "path." Furthermore, she adds, the two names don't actually sound the same in Chinese. "Ours is TAO - it goes up.? It means 'peach.' it's a completely different character. Theirs is TAO (with a 'd' sound) - it's falling."

Attorney James Goggin of Verrill Dana in Portland is representing TAO of Brunswick on a pro bono basis. He says the other flaw in the complaint is this:? "They allege that consumers in Brunswick, Maine, would? likely be confused into thinking that when they were going into the restaurant in Brunswick, that they were actually going into the restaurant in Las Vegas, which on its face is ridiculous," Goggin says.

Goggin says the TAO Group has asserted claims against other restaurants using the TAO name. But, he adds, there are many, many more restaurants using the name. "We did a quick Google search on 'TAO restaurant' and we got 270,000 results in 0.27 seconds," he says.

And this, he says, weakens the strength of the trademark. Restaurant owners Cecile and Cara Stadler say they've had many messages of support from the Brunswick community.? Local resident Eileen Boardman describes the lawsuit as a case of corporate bullying, "where someone with more assets and deeper pockets are using the legal system to take advantage of small business, small business owners."

Attorney James Goggin says the next stage will involve requests for more evidence from both sides. He doesn't expect it will come to court before next fall.

BenQ GW2450

The BenQ GW series brings VA (Vertical Alignment) panel technology to the company's consumer line of desktop displays. Quality-wise, VA technology falls somewhere in between IPS (In Plane Switching) and TN (Twisted Nematic) panel technology; they offer better color and black levels than TN panels but can't match the color and viewing angle performance of IPS panels. With the GW2450 ($179 street) you get a 24-inch monitor that delivers the deeply saturated colors and inky blacks that make VA panels an attractive alternative to TN panels. You don't get much in the way of features though, and it lacks HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity, but it's a good bargain nonetheless.

Design and Features
A matte black cabinet with rounded glossy black bezels holds the 24-inch panel, which has a native resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. At 2.5 inches thick it is relatively bulky for a monitor that uses LED backlighting. The cabinet is supported by an oval base that can be tilted forward and backward but lacks height, swivel, and pivot adjustability.

I/O ports are scarce; DVI and VGA video inputs are located at the rear of the cabinet, but that's all you get with this model. There are no HDMI or USB ports, nor are there any audio inputs or speakers. There are six buttons on the right side of the cabinet, including the power switch. In addition to a menu button that launches the OSD (on screen display) system there are hot keys for changing the input source, the display mode, and the aspect ratio. There's also an Enter key for selecting menu choices.

There are six display modes, including Standard, Movie, Game Photo, sRGB, and Eco. Basic picture settings include Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Gamma, and Color Temperature, and you can fine tune individual Red, Green, and Blue levels as well as Hue and Saturation levels. When using an analog (VGA) signal you can use the Auto Adjust function or manually adjust Phase, Clock, and Position settings.

The GW2450 comes with a three-year warranty covering parts, labor, and backlighting. It also comes with a CD containing a user guide and drivers and a VGA cable. A DVI cable is not included in the box.

Performance
The GW2450's VA panel boasts a native contrast ratio of 5000:1 (most TN panels have a native contrast ratio of 1000:1 but use a variable backlighting technology to create a much higher "dynamic" contrast ratio ). As a result, the GW2450 produces very deep blacks, which helps give colors a great deal of pop. Swatches from the DisplayMate Color Scales test were well saturated but not oversaturated, and full screen primary colors appeared uniform with no noticeable hot spots.

Grayscale reproduction was mixed; the panel had no trouble displaying the lightest shades of gray on the 64-Step Grayscale test, but instead of gradating to dark gray the two darkest shades were black. Not surprisingly, shadow detail on my test photos was less than optimal.

The GW2450's 4-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response handled fast motion gaming without issue while playing the PC version of Assassin's Creed II. There was no noticeable lag or ghosting while displaying my 1080p test video, The Magic of Flight, but viewing angles were narrow, with obvious color shifting occurring at extreme side angles. Top and bottom viewing angle performance was also sketchy. Although viewing angle performance is better than what you get with TN panel technology it can't match the performance of IPS-based monitors such as the Dell UltraSharp U2412M.

The GW2450 used 31 watts of power during my testing while running in standard mode, which is typical for a panel of this size. However, it used only 18 watts while operating in Eco mode, which produces a dimmer picture but is still bright enough for everyday use. The monitor uses recycled packing materials and is Energy Star 5.1 qualified, all of which earn it our Greentech stamp of approval.

If you've been itching for a VA monitor but have limited funds, the BenQ GW2450 is an excellent choice. Granted, you'll have to live without an HDMI port and other niceties like an ergonomic stand and USB ports, but you do get inky blacks and robust colors at a price that's hard to beat. It won't put much of a dent in your utility bill either. If you require better grayscale accuracy and can live with a smaller screen, consider our Editors' Choice for budget monitors, the IPS-based Asus VS229H-P.

The Clicker: You?re going to the finals again! How do you feel?
Shawn Johnson: Good! I?m feeling really well!

The Clicker: You and you pro partner Derek Hough were by yourselves on stage first waiting to hear if you were going to the finals. Did you think that was a good sign?
Shawn: Honestly, not at all. We could have been the first ones going home. You?re up there and you know it?s only that red light separating you from going to the end.

The Clicker: How is it going to the finals with Melissa Rycroft again -- only this time it?s Kelly Monaco in place of Gilles Marini?
Shawn: It?s completely different. It means a whole new thing this time. The first time I went to the finals it was to test my abilities outside of my gymnastics. Now, it?s about coming back to see if I can go even further.

The Clicker: Host Brooke Burke-Charvet was trying to get info out of Derek during an on-air interview about what he has planned for the freestyle. And if anyone would know that Derek might already be planning something it?d be one of his former partners.
Shawn: Honestly, we haven?t talked about our routine. An hour ago, we found our song had been approved. We?re going to production (Tuesday) night to (plan) it all out.

The Clicker: The parameters regarding what can be included in this season?s freestyle sound like they?re even more open. Is it true you can bring other dancers in to the routine?
Shawn: You can pretty much do anything. You can bring in other dancers, people, lighting, staging?anything. As long as you?re still in the forefront, pretty much anything goes.

The Clicker: Are you up for anything?
Shawn: Yes! Of course! I?ve put my trust in Derek from day one and it?s going to be up to him.
