LG Optimus L7 successor leaks in Russia with 4.3-inch display, dual-SIM ability

Successor to the budget LG Optimus L7 leaks in Russia with 43inch display, dualSIM ability

As entry-level phones go, last year's Optimus L7 had a few pluses on its score sheet -- but equally some serious drawbacks, including a reluctant touchscreen and a shoddy camera module. There's always hope for progress in this business, however, and given that LG already hinted at a new L-series phone in its earnings report, we're inclined to believe a leak that's just come in from Russian site Hi.tech.mail.ru. The pictures show a much softer-edged design with a dedicated SIM-switch button down below, in both black and white. In terms of specs, we're looking at a 2,460mAh battery that is said to last for two days, an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 720p video and a 1GHz dual-core chip powering Android 4.1 with LG's custom UI on top. The Russian price of 12,990 rubles equates to around $430, which is a lot more than the $300 SIM-free price of the first L7 (not to mention a Nexus 4) -- but then these currency conversions are often wayward.

Not only this, it has also become the most influential thing in running the government of the country. The legal profession in India helps to empower the Indians to fight against the caste structure and inequalities prevalent in the society. Citing the importance of legal profession in the country, the government is paying extra attention towards improving the quality of legal education in the majority of the law colleges in India. This has been a step forward to create more and more skilled and professional lawyers.

The world of employment and jobs in India has changed a lot and there has been a drastic increase in the opportunities for legally trained persons. Rapid globalization has been one of the other important factors that have led to revolution and liberalization in the legal industry of India. CLEMSON, S.C. A federal agency has turned to Clemson University's South Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit to collect data that will help it assess the environmental impact of oil and natural gas operations on the marine and coastal environments of the northern Gulf of Mexico's outer continental shelf.

The South Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit will fill data holes on the migratory habits, demographics and reproductive success of eastern brown pelicans. The data will serve as a snapshot that will help the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) understand the impact of human activities, such as oil and natural gas operations, and help identify possible mitigation protocols.

The four-year study, which will commence in the spring, is a collaboration between the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clemson University and the states of Texas, Louisiana and Florida. The research is supported by a $1.2 million grant from BOEM and USGS.

"This research will be paramount in understanding the migration and success of eastern brown pelican colonies in relation to each other in the northern Gulf of Mexico," said Patrick Jodice, leader of the South Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and professor in Clemson's School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences. "The data we collect will allow the BOEM to more fully assess the potential impact of oil and gas development in the Northern Gulf."

The research will cover an area extending from the Gulf Coast of Texas along the Louisiana Coast to the northwestern Gulf Coast of Florida.

Researchers will use satellite and GPS transmitters to gather data on the dispersal, seasonal and annual movements, season home range and site fidelity of adult brown pelicans among nesting colonies in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Data on body condition and health will be assessed through physical examinations and avian blood-chemistry profiles. Researchers will attempt to identify what portion of brown pelican contaminant loads are derived from particular prey sources and foraging areas by performing analyses of predator and prey tissue samples at colony sites.

This research will build upon previous efforts by Jodice to study the ecology of brown pelicans in South Carolina and in the Gulf of Mexico in response to the Deepwater Horizon incident.

While the eastern brown pelican is not listed on the Endangered Species Act or the Migratory Bird Treaty act, it is considered a "Species of Conservation Concern" by all coastal states along the Gulf of Mexico except Alabama.

Poor Sleep Prevents Brain From Storing Memories

I was going to post anonymous, but recovered my ancient log-in so that you'd at least have a "face" for this drive-by. I don't even know why I'm posting, other than my brother did something similar, but at least he had the minimum courage to tell his wife the reasons as he was leaving. I'd never been quite so disappointed in him when I heard he just walked away... So, what you wrote hit something in my heart of hearts, so, here goes random helpful internet guy...

I'm so sorry to hear how you were hurt. I don't know why people do hurtful things like that. There's no excuse for abandoning someone that cares for you and that you've cared for in the past.

I'm sorry the hurt is still with you. I hope you're getting help, and if not, PLEASE get help. Some may say it's appropriate for you to have problems while you "mourn" the loss of your loved one, but if you've been in so much pain that it STILL troubles your sleep, for over a year, that's not "normal mourning."

Your brain can do amazingly bad things to you, and like most brain disorders, it's really hard to realize that you may need help. The mind loves to lie to itself, to reassure itself that while things aren't "right," they're not *THAT* bad. But it might just be. You may need more than just *struggle* to get through this. I'm not talking meds (though they may help too, they did for my own issues), I'm talking a licensed therapist at the least, a shrink if you can get one.

This is a link [seculartherapy.org] to a project that looks to connect people with therapists who practice based on Evidence and published data. I'm specifically posting a link to non-religious therapists, not to cause trouble, but because even if you may be religious, and may indeed find a good religious therapist, it's also possible their beliefs may conflict with yours, and may cause more pain than balm. I think it makes sense to start with a therapist that doesn't even have religion as a component, then discuss introducing that as part of your therapy later, should you desire it.

As alone as you may feel, as worthless and petty as far, FAR too many people are, there are *good* people out there. People who can more than make up for the scumbags out there, who will trip over themselves to help you, if they just know you are in need.

If you're not sure you need help, if you think you're *probably* ok, or *mostly* ok, try to get help anyways... if you really are fine, than the worst that can happen is they agree with you, right?

This was a much bigger post than I intended, stranger/friend. And you may never see it or read it. I hope you do. I hope that you're not alone with your pain, and if you are, that maybe for a moment my words make you feel less so. And if you need it, I hope you decide my completely unsolicited advice is, instead of insulting, a kind-of tool, another way for you to help yourself.

Billions in gas drilling royalties transform lives

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Private landowners are reaping billions of dollars in royalties each year from the boom in natural gas drilling, transforming lives and livelihoods even as the windfall provides only a modest boost to the broader economy.

In Pennsylvania alone, royalty payments could top $1.2 billion for 2012, according to an Associated Press analysis that looked at state tax information, production records and estimates from the National Association of Royalty Owners.

For some landowners, the unexpected royalties have made a big difference.

"We used to have to put stuff on credit cards. It was basically living from paycheck to paycheck," said Shawn Georgetti, who runs a family dairy farm in Avella, about 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

Natural gas production has boomed in many states over the past few years as advances in drilling opened up vast reserves buried in deep shale rock, such as the Marcellus formation in Pennsylvania and the Barnett in Texas.

Nationwide, the royalty owners association estimates, natural gas royalties totaled $21 billion in 2010, the most recent year for which it has done a full analysis. Texas paid out the most in gas royalties that year, about $6.7 billion, followed by Wyoming at $2 billion and Alaska at $1.9 billion.

Exact estimates of natural gas royalty payments aren't possible because contracts and wholesale prices of gas vary, and specific tax information is private. But some states release estimates of the total revenue collected for all royalties, and feedback on thousands of contracts has led the royalty owners association to conclude that the average royalty is 18.75 percent of gas production.

"Our fastest-growing state chapter is our Pennsylvania chapter, and we just formed a North Dakota chapter. We've seen a lot of new people, and new questions," said Jerry Simmons, the director of the association, which was founded in 1980 and is based in Oklahoma.

Simmons said he hasn't heard of anyone getting less than 12.5 percent, and that's also the minimum rate set by law in Pennsylvania. Simmons knows of one contract in another state where the owner received 25 percent of production, but that's unusual.

By comparison, a 10 to 25 percent range is similar to what a top recording artist might get in royalties from CD sales, while a novelist normally gets a 12.5 percent to 15 percent royalty on hardcover book sales.

Simmons added that for oil and gas "there is no industry standard," since the royalty is often adjusted based on the per-acre signing bonus a landowner receives. While many people are lured by higher upfront bonuses, a higher royalty rate can generate more total income over the life of a well, which can stretch for 25 years.

Before Range Resources drilled a well on the family property in 2012, Georgetti said, he was stuck using 30-year-old equipment, with no way to upgrade without going seriously into debt.

"You don't have that problem anymore. It's a lot more fun to farm," Georgetti said, since he has been able to buy newer equipment that's bigger, faster and more fuel-efficient. The drilling hasn't caused any problems for the farm, he said.

Range spokesman Matt Pitzarella said the Fort Worth, Texas-based company has paid "well over" $1 billion to Pennsylvania landowners, with most of that coming since 2008.

One economist noted that the windfall payments from the natural gas boom are wonderful for individuals, but that they represent just a tiny portion of total economic activity.

For example, the $1 billion for Pennsylvania landowners sounds like a lot, but "it's just not going to have a big impact on the overall vitality of the overall economy," said Robert Inman, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton business school. "I think the issue is, what difference does it make for the individual families?"

Pennsylvania's total gross domestic product in 2011 was about $500 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Inman noted that total gas industry hiring and investment can have a far bigger effect on a state or region, and companies have invested tens of billions of dollars just in Pennsylvania on pipelines, infrastructure, and drilling in recent years.

For example, in North Dakota the shale oil and minerals boom contributed 2.8 percent of GDP growth to the entire state economy in 2011, according to Commerce Department data.

Another variable in how much royalty owners actually receive is the wholesale price of gas. That has dropped significantly over the past two years even as production has boomed in Pennsylvania and many other states. Average wholesale prices went from about $4.50 per unit of gas in 2010 to about $3 in 2012. For many leaseholders, that meant a decline in royalties.

The boom in natural gas royalties has even led to niche spinoff companies that look for lease heirs who don't even know they're owed money.

Michael Zwick is president of Assets International, a Michigan company that searches for missing heirs.

"It was an underserved niche," Zwick said of oil and gas leases. When a company can't find an heir to lease royalties, the money often goes to state unclaimed property funds.

Zwick said he has found a few dozen people whose gas lease money was being held in escrow, including one who was owed about $250,000 in drilling royalties. But the average amount, he said, is far lower.

Achieve New Heights With This Self Improvement Advice - FREE ...

Lots of people can assist you with learning a lot more about yourself. Friends can help you, along with many good teachers and professionals who will explain your feelings plus analyze your thoughts. For more information regarding the fitness equipment take a look at my blogging site. It has further information on the health promotion together with the perfect selling prices on-line so you won't need to take the time trying to find the most effective packages on your own.

Avoid waste too much money on comfort products. As part of your self improvement, clean up your financial matters. Eliminate unnecessary expenses.

When trying to handle depression, focus on your diet and increase your complex carbohydrates. In case your complex carb intake is lower than suggested, your body won't produce enough this. Complex carbs that you can easily consume to raise these levels include fiber rich foods, nuts, raw vegetables and much more.

It is very important know exactly where you presently are, and the direction you would like to go. This will set you on the path of self improvement, and give you a need to do much better. If you can't identify those two points, or can distinguish between them, you will not make any progress within your desire for personal growth.

You should attempt to find and read books that will tell you about personal development. Take the time to read a few books to find new ideas and tips you had not thought of. Be sure that you pick out a book that has been favorably reviewed because a lot of the times, these type of books can be poorly written.

Using a better life often happens because of self-discipline, and keep in mind that the things you wish for others might have an effect on you. You should only be positive in your wishes for others. If you endeavor to be positive about all things, then that positivity will come back to you.

In case self improvement is an important goal in your life, be sure to feed your faith with love. Faith cannot exist without love. It is important to be devoted to yourself. In this way, you could be a living example to those who are around you.

It has been said that listening is no less essential than speaking when it comes to effective conversation. This is particularly true if you are talking about self-development. Listen to your thoughts and learn to recognize your desires. Listening to what you tell yourself will help you know what you need and how to best improve yourself.

When trying to achieve self improvement, failures can dampen and hurt an individual's ego and self esteem. Approach your failures as opportunities to learn. Failure helps you determine what you are good at and exactly what needs improvement. If you view it that way, when you fall short, you should be happy, since you now know more about you.

Usually read from multiple sources on personal development. A good personal development book can provide you with great advice and ideas that may change your life. It is necessary, however , that you select a book that has received good evaluations. There is no policing on the authors of self improvement books, and some of these are sorely lacking in credibility.

In case you experience anxiety in social situations, ask a friend to join you at the movie theater. You will be out and about, but not in a setting that requires a lot of social interaction. This will also help you get used to crowds.

It is important when you are working on your personal development that you know what you plan to do in your life. Creating long-term goals is a necessity, because it can transform your perspective and increase motivation.

Rather than boasting about your myriad medals, trophies, and awards, ask others about some of their proudest moments and most notable achievements. This allows you to discover some of the great things that people around you are capable of accomplishing, which helps you to respect others by providing you insight into their character.

Remember to practice humility. We are each just a tiny little bit of the universe. There never comes a time when there is nothing left for you learn. Learn as much as you can from each person you meet. When you approach situations with an open mind, you will see how much you can learn from others.

As you have seen, helping yourself live a better life is not as scary as it may appear. The benefits of personal development are sometimes intrinsic with psychic rewards, while at other times the benefits are external with financial or material rewards. Making your life better is within your grasp, and there is no better time for you to start than now.

Mentor Texts: Market Your Book to Teachers

Guest post By Marcie Flinchum Atkins
What is a mentor text?
As a writer, do you read as many books as you can get your hands on? When you are stuck on how to write a particular scene, or you can?t get your beginning quite right, do you go to some of your favorite books to see how that writer handled it? If you read like a writer, then you are using mentor texts.
Mentor texts are stellar pieces of writing that are used to ?mentor? another writer. It?s teacher-speak for a book that a teacher uses as an exemplary example of how to write well.

Market Your Book as a Mentor Text

You are a professional writer. Just like athletes who want to become better observe and learn from the pros, young writers should look to your writing as a model.
As a teacher, I don?t teach kids how to write from a textbook. I use real examples from books they love. Of course, teachers love to find books that can be used to entice reluctant readers to read. We search for books that tie into our Social Studies and Science curriculums. But we also want to find books that can help us show kids how to write.
I?m not suggesting we are looking for how-to books. Teachers are using their favorite books to teach kids how to read like writers. As a writer, you can market your book to teachers to use as a mentor text. We aren?t just looking for an interesting story (although that is VERY important), we are also looking for ways to show kids how you put your story together. How did you use description to make the reader ?see? the setting? How did you use shorter sentences to speed up the pace? We want to show students how you stitched your story together.

Mentor Text Lessons

There are hundreds of writing lessons that you could do with a text and each teacher will gear specific skills to his/her state standards and the level of the students. Take a look at the standards for the grade level of your book (Common Core or individual state standards) to see if you can capitalize on your writing strengths and pair it up with what teachers need to teach in the classroom.

Some common ideas for lessons include:

  • Word choice?including vivid verbs, specific vocabulary, sensory words
  • Word play?onomatopeoia, puns, figurative language, made up words
  • Description?including descriptions of setting and characters
  • Beginnings and Endings
  • Organization of text?this is useful in non-fiction
  • Sentence Variety

I teach fourth grade, and in the last month, I have used THE NIGHT FAIRY by Laura Amy Schlitz, SAVVY by Ingrid Law, and OVER AND UNDER THE SNOW by Kate Messner to help students use vivid verbs in their own writing. I used COME ON, RAIN! by Karen Hesse and HEAT WAVE by Eileen Spinelli to show them how sensory words can make their writing better. I find myself going back to some books over and over again because they are full of so many writing gems.

For a sample lesson plan, see how I suggested 3-5th grade teachers use Darcy Pattison?s WISDOM, THE MIDWAY ALBATROSS: Surviving the Japanese Tsunami and other Disasters for Over 60 Years.

Do you do school visits? Speak at teacher conferences? Have a teacher resource area on your website? These are all good places to market your book to writing teachers and give examples of how your book can be used in the writing curriculum.

Resources for Mentor Texts

I have a link on my website that lists books and online resources I like for mentor texts. They are resources for teachers, but they will be helpful for writers to see how teachers use books as mentor texts.

You have spent years perfecting your craft of writing. Help teachers not only inspire readers to enjoy your story, but also provide ways they can inspire budding writers in their classroom as well. Market your book as a mentor text for young writers.

Senators reach agreement on immigration reform

(AP) ? A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation's immigration laws.

The deal, which was to be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Now, with some Republicans chastened by the November elections which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats, some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," McCain said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain said.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the senators will call for accomplishing four goals:

?Creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, contingent upon securing the border and better tracking of people here on visas.

?Reforming the legal immigration system, including awarding green cards to immigrants who obtain advanced degrees in science, math, technology or engineering from an American university.

?Creating an effective employment verification system to ensure that employers do not hire illegal immigrants.

?Allowing more low-skill workers into the country and allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can demonstrate they couldn't recruit a U.S. citizen; and establishing an agricultural worker program.

The principles being released Monday are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans, since there's wide agreement in identifying problems with the current immigration system. The most difficult disagreement is likely to arise over how to accomplish the path to citizenship.

In order to satisfy the concerns of Rubio and other Republicans, the senators are calling for the completion of steps on border security and oversight of those here on visas before taking major steps forward on the path to citizenship.

Even then, those here illegally would have to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already in line for a green card within the current immigration system.

That could be a highly cumbersome process, but how to make it more workable is being left to future negotiations. The senators envision a more streamlined process toward citizenship for immigrants brought here as children by their parents, and for agricultural workers.

The debate will play out at the start of Obama's second term, as he aims to spend the political capital afforded him by his re-election victory on an issue that has eluded past presidents and stymied him during his first term despite his promises to the Latino community to act.

"As the president has made clear for some time, immigration reform is an important priority and he is pleased that progress is being made with bipartisan support," a White House spokesman, Clark Stevens, said in a statement. "At the same time, he will not be satisfied until there is meaningful reform and he will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved."

For Republicans, the November elections were a stark schooling on the importance of Latino voters, who voted for Obama over Republican Mitt Romney 71 percent to 27 percent, helping ensure Obama's victory. That led some Republican leaders to conclude that supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship has become a political imperative.

Senators push immigration plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has agreed on an immigration reform plan that would provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States but only after borders are better secured.

The plan, unveiled a day before President Barack Obama is to give a policy speech on immigration in Nevada, tackles the most explosive issue - how to deal with the millions of foreigners living in the United States illegally.

Under the group's proposal, undocumented immigrants would be allowed to register with the government, pay a fine, and then be given probationary legal status allowing them to work.

Ultimately, they would have to "go to the end of the line" and apply for permanent status, according to the document by eight Senators including Republicans Marco Rubio of Florida, John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Michael Bennet of Colorado and Robert Menendez of New Jersey.

The White House praised the group's efforts but warned that Obama would not be satisfied until there was meaningful reform. The president "will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved," a White House spokesman said.

Lawmakers have scheduled a news conference for 2:30 p.m. ET.

Under the plan, no one would be given more permanent legal status until new measures were implemented to stem the flow of immigrants across U.S. borders, a critical concession to conservatives and border state members of congress.

The path to citizenship would also be contingent on a new enforcement measure to track the status of immigrants who may have overstayed visas, the document said.

The proposal resembles previous immigration bills - including a 2007 measure that died in Congress in part because of disagreement over the timing and balance of border-enforcement measures versus granting citizenship to the millions of undocumented immigrants.

But advocates noted that this time, the climate was ripe for immigration reform.

"Conservatives, law enforcers and businesses are calling for immigration reform. You did not see that in 2007," said Ali Noorani, the executive director with the National Immigration Forum advocacy group.

Democrats have considered future citizenship for undocumented immigrants a "bottom line" for a bill, as Schumer said Sunday at a news conference.

Republicans, in turn, have tended to stress border security.

While the framework released Monday includes something for all these groups, translating the four-page outline into legislation with a chance of passing is likely to prove challenging, notwithstanding the bi-partisan makeup of the group and support that came early Monday from U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

SUPPORT FROM CONSERVATIVES

Rubio's involvement has helped give the plan credibility among some Republicans. His proposals have attracted support from influential conservatives, including former vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and TV commentator Bill O'Reilly.

Last year, Rubio had a hard time getting conservatives on board for allowing "dreamers" to stay here - children of illegals, many of whom have spent most of their lives in the United States, are in the country through no fault of their own and attend U.S. schools.

Rubio is a Cuban-American who is often mentioned as a presidential contender. He is a favorite of the Tea Party conservative movement.

In addition to the path to citizenship, the Senators' proposal outlines three other legislative goals: retaining and attracting highly qualified workers; creating a system to prevent identity theft and the hiring of unauthorized workers: and establishing a way to bring in unskilled labor while providing them with workers rights.

The immigration issue was largely pushed aside during Obama's first term as he tackled healthcare and the economy. But the president, who had overwhelming support from Hispanic voters in his 2012 re-election, cited it as part of his agenda when sworn in for a second term last week.

Immigration has been among the toughest issues confronting Congress over the past two decades, in part because so many powerful interest groups have a stake in it, from business organizations in need of skilled labor to the trade union movement, which worries that a flow of immigrant labor unprotected by U.S. workplace laws could depress wages.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has made immigration reform a priority this year, expressing particular support for provisional visas for lesser-skilled workers and expansion of green cards for foreign nationals who receive advanced degrees from U.S. colleges and universities.

On Monday, the Chamber praised the proposal and said it would work with all parties to get a bill passed.

Northern Illinois Basketball Four-Point 1st Half Sets NCAA Record For Futility In Loss To Eastern Michigan

Four points.

One ... two ... three ... four points is all the men's basketball team from Northern Illinois could manage during a first half for the record books on Saturday. Breaking their own NCAA Division I record for ineptitude, the Huskies made just one field goal before halftime against Eastern Michigan.

The Huskies' lone bucket in the first half was actually the first score, staking them to a 2-0 lead just more than a minute into the game. It went down from hill from there.

WATCH VIDEO ABOVE

"Our guys played hard," Huskies coach Mark Montgomery said after the game, via The Associated Press. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't make a shot. We just needed someone to make a basket to get our team going, but I wouldn't say that we were taking bad shots. We had makeable, open shots, they just wouldn't go in, but our guys kept defending, kept playing hard."

A whopping 21 points in the second half was not enough to overcome the false start in the first half as NIU lost, 42-25. While the general reaction was one of shock, the EMU Twitter account seemed quite excited by the development.

EMUHoops
NIU missed 30 consecutive shots in the 1st half. #EMUHoops

According to ESPN Stats & Information, NIU set the D-I record for lowest field goal percentage in the shot clock era, shooting 8-61 from the field (13.1%).

ESPN Stats & Info

Northern Illinois basketball has 2 halves this season with 5 or fewer points; NIU football only had 1 such half (1st half of Orange Bowl).

In December, NIU set the previous record for first half futility, scoring just five points in the first half against Dayton. The record before that had been held by Cal, who managed just five points in the first half against Notre Dame in 2010, per Flyer News.

In all-time case of "glass half full" thinking, the account of the game at the NIU website trumpets the team's defensive effort.

"Northern Illinois posted its best defensive effort in seven seasons allowing just 42 points on Saturday afternoon, but it came in a losing effort as the Huskies fell to Eastern Michigan, 42-25, at the EMU Convocation Center."

Well played, Northern Illinois Athletics.

MORE FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) ? Northern Illinois broke its own NCAA Division I record for futility, scoring just four points in the first half of a 42-25 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

The Huskies (4-14, 2-4 Mid-American) also broke the record for lowest field goal percentage in a half of the shot clock era (3.2 percent) and lowest field goal percentage in a game (13.1 percent), and tied the mark for fewest made field goals in a half after hitting 1 of 31 attempts in the opening period. Abdel Bader scored on a fast break one minute into the game to put Northern Illinois up 2-0 for its only bucket of the half, and followed that with 29 straight misses.

"Our guys played hard," Huskies coach Mark Montgomery said. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't make a shot. We just needed someone to make a basket to get our team going, but I wouldn't say that we were taking bad shots. We had makeable, open shots, they just wouldn't go in, but our guys kept defending, kept playing hard."

Savannah State had held the record of 4.3 percent shooting in the first half against Kansas State on Jan. 7, 2008, a game in which it also made just one field goal in the half. Miami of Ohio held the previous record for lowest field goal percentage for a game in the modern era with 13.3 percent against Dayton on Dec. 29, 2001.

Northern Illinois, which features a lineup of mostly freshmen and sophomores, earlier this season set the record for fewest points in a first half with five against Dayton on Dec. 1.

Glenn Bryant led Eastern Michigan (10-10, 3-3) with 10 points. The Eagles led 18-4 at the half ? the fewest combined points in a half since North Carolina Central (13) and Savannah State (5) combined for 18 in the first half a game on Jan. 20, 2010.

Daveon Balls hit a 3-pointer for the Huskies with 2:05 remaining to make the score 37-22, helping them avoid the record for fewest points in a game (20 by Saint Louis on Jan. 10, 2008 vs. George Washington) in the shot clock era. It was also Northern Illinois' only 3-pointer in 33 attempts, which kept them from breaking the record for most 3-pointers attempted (24) without a make.

"It becomes contagious, both making shots and missing shots," Montgomery said. "At 18-4, if we come out and make a couple of baskets we would have been right back in it ... but it just didn't happen."

Michael Bloomberg Makes Massive Donation To ... - Business Insider

AP

Michael Bloomberg just announced a massive gift on the order of $350 million to Johns Hopkins University, which is his alma-mater.

According to the press release, he has now given over $1 billion to the school, a first in history.

-----------------------------

MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG COMMITS $350 MILLION TO JOHNS HOPKINS

FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL ACADEMIC INITIATIVE

New York Mayor believed first to give lifetime $1 billion to one U.S. higher education institution

Philanthropist and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has committed $350 million to The Johns Hopkins University, anchoring a major initiative aimed at bringing significant innovation to U.S. higher education. The total commitment ? the largest ever to the university ? lifts Bloomberg?s lifetime giving to Johns Hopkins beyond $1 billion.

The majority of the new gift, $250 million out of $350 million, will be part of a larger effort to raise $1 billion to facilitate cross-disciplinary work across the university to galvanize people, resources, research and educational opportunities around a set of complex global challenges.? Initially, the funds will be used to support the appointment of faculty in the areas of water resource sustainability, individualized health care delivery, global health, the science of learning and urban revitalization. The remaining $100 million will be dedicated to need-based financial aid for undergraduate students, ensuring that the most talented and driven students are admitted to the university?s classrooms, regardless of economic circumstance. Over the next 10 years, 2,600 Bloomberg Scholarships will be awarded.

The transformational gift will enhance Johns Hopkins? flexible and multi-disciplinary approach to solving fundamental societal problems. It will bring together scientists and scholars from numerous disciplines -- ranging from politics and policy to healthcare delivery to basic curiosity-driven research -- to support more meaningful collaboration. The goal, simply put, is to make it as easy for faculty, staff and students to work across disciplines as within them.

?Michael Bloomberg is a visionary philanthropist, a force for social good on the order of Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Leland Stanford and our own founder, Johns Hopkins,? said Ronald J. Daniels, president of The Johns Hopkins University.

?This latest initiative allows us to greatly accelerate our investment in talented people and bring them together in a highly creative and dynamic atmosphere," Daniels said. ?It illustrates Mike's passion for fixing big problems quickly and efficiently. It will ensure not only that Johns

Hopkins helps to solve humanity?s problems, but also that it leads the world?s universities in showing how it should be done.?

?Johns Hopkins University has been an important part of my life since I first set foot on campus more than five decades ago,? Bloomberg said. ?Each dollar I have given has been well-spent improving the institution and, just as importantly, making its education available to students who might otherwise not be able to afford it. Giving is only meaningful if the money will make a difference in people?s lives, and I know of no other institution that can make a bigger difference in lives around the world through its groundbreaking research -- especially in the field of public health.?

This gift will endow 50 Bloomberg Distinguished Professors whose expertise crosses traditional academic disciplines; they will anchor collaborative, cross-disciplinary research. These distinguished faculty members -- each a forward-thinking leader with cross-cutting research interests -- will be recruited from around the world and will serve as human bridges among disciplines and schools spanning medicine and the humanities, public health and education, social science and engineering. The Bloomberg Distinguished Professors will carry their interdisciplinary and research-focused approach into their teaching, ensuring that the university?s students are equipped to graduate from their classrooms into the real world to solve real problems.

Johns Hopkins was America?s first research university, establishing a model emulated throughout the United States and around the world. It has also been home to groundbreaking examples of interdisciplinary partnerships in areas such as biomedical engineering, public health, space studies and international studies. Drawing on this legacy and through this latest gift from Bloomberg, Daniels said, Johns Hopkins seeks to reconceive the traditional model and make collaboration across disciplines the convention rather than the exception.

?When the Baltimore merchant Johns Hopkins left $7 million nearly 140 years ago to create our university and hospital,? Daniels said, ?it incited nothing less than a revolution in American higher education. It led to the modern research university and academic medical center, brand new institutions that recognized the power in combining knowledge creation with its teaching and its use for the good of humanity.

?Now, with Michael Bloomberg?s commitment to this transformational initiative as the centerpiece of our efforts, Johns Hopkins seeks again to redefine higher education in America. We want nothing less than to accelerate the pace of change in universities and academic medicine, to create the new model for institutions intended to make the world a better place.?

Bloomberg is believed to be the first person ever to reach the $1 billion level of giving to a single U.S. institution of higher education. With this new commitment, Bloomberg -- chairman of the university?s board of trustees from 1996 to 2002 and previously chair of the Johns Hopkins Initiative fundraising campaign -- has now given Johns Hopkins $1.118 billion in the 49 years since he graduated. His first Johns Hopkins gift was $5 in 1965, a year after he received his bachelor?s degree in engineering from the university. His support has benefitted students and faculty in every school of the university, patients at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and anyone whose life has been touched by Johns Hopkins.

Bloomberg made his first $1 million commitment to the university in 1984, 20 years after his graduation. That gift created a professorship in the humanities named in honor of his mother, Charlotte. He also honored his mother with a $120 million gift toward construction of the new Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children?s Center, a 12-story, 560,000-square-foot tower at The Johns Hopkins Hospital with 205 private rooms, a 45-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 40-bed pediatric intensive care unit and 10 state-of-the-art surgical suites. It opened in 2012.

The mayor?s generosity has had an extraordinary impact on Johns Hopkins in every way -- in terms of facilities and infrastructure, research and academic achievement, student body quality and diversity.

Applications for undergraduate admissions at the university?s Homewood campus have more than doubled since 2001, and selectivity has increased from a 34 percent admittance rate to 18 percent. In the same period, the number of underrepresented minority members in the freshman class has increased from fewer than 7 percent to nearly 20 percent. The university?s Bloomberg School of Public Health and School of Nursing are each top-ranked in the U.S. News & World Report ?best graduate schools? rankings and the School of Medicine is second. ?

As trustee and donor, Bloomberg has overseen, and in many cases funded, a quantum improvement in labs and classrooms, patient care facilities, arts and cultural centers, and campus amenities across Johns Hopkins campuses, insisting that each project emphasize the design of the environment, include public art and encourage collaboration among students and faculty.

?There is little doubt that the modern history of Johns Hopkins has been inextricably and profoundly linked to the remarkable vision and generosity of Mike Bloomberg. We are so much better for his faith and confidence? Daniels said.

Capital and Infrastructure

In all, the mayor has given $240 million toward capital and infrastructure projects, including the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy in 1988, implementation of the Homewood campus master plan from 1998 through 2002, massive renovations and improvements at the Peabody Institute in 2000, and a complete gutting and interior rebuilding of the landmark Gilman Hall at Homewood from 2005 to 2007.

Financial Aid

In recent years, Bloomberg has funded 20 percent of all need-based financial aid grants for undergraduates in the university?s schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. With the latest gift, his student aid gifts now total nearly $219 million, of which $164 million has been for undergraduates.

Bloomberg School of Public Health

An ardent believer in the power of public health discoveries and practice to impact the lives of millions around the globe, Bloomberg has directed $289 million to what since 2001 has been known as the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has given $125 million since 2001 to establish and support the Malaria Research Institute within the Bloomberg School of Public Health. The multidisciplinary center seeks to eradicate that mosquito-borne disease, which in 2010 afflicted an estimated 216 million people and killed 655,000 worldwide. The institute conducts basic and applied research on mosquito biology, the malaria parasite, disease processes and potential vaccines.

?Bloomberg?s public health-related gifts have also supported research into gun violence prevention, tobacco use reduction, safe water, mental health, road safety and global health initiatives.

Research

The mayor?s support for other Johns Hopkins research has reached $336 million. That includes? $69 million since 2000 to establish and support the School of Medicine?s Institute for Cell Engineering, which focuses on the application of stem cells to improve human health.

As you can see, this was a very, very short duel, mainly because it is just to illustrate the workings (and I was dueling myself...) I think the basic system is pretty easy to understand - Changes in LP are always bold, the turn markings are bold, and names of cards in italics. If any questions, feel free to post them here :) Also: leave a message when you are ready to start your own duel, and I'll set up another OOC thread so we can start. I have all the exam decks ready :)

LaCie Blade Runner drive now available, offers standout storage for $299

LaCie teased us at CES with the prospect of a rare high-concept hard drive design in the Blade Runner, but it left out the rather important matter of when we could buy the Philippe Starck-designed storage. As we've discovered, we didn't have to wait long -- the Blade Runner has just become available. Plunk down $300 and you'll get a 4TB, USB 3.0-based external drive that melds a blob-like disk shell with aluminum blades that both cool the main body and create a (minor) conversation piece. Just be sure to hurry if you're looking for a dash of art with your extra drive space, as it's doubtful that the Blade Runner's 9,999-unit production run will last.
