(AP) ? Friends and relatives of Yoselyn Ortega, the New York City nanny accused of stabbing two young children to death, said she appeared to be struggling emotionally and financially recently. Few, though, could offer any explanation for what might have caused her to attack the children.

"She snapped," the nanny's sister, Celia Ortega, told The New York Post. "We don't understand what happened to her mind."

Yoselyn Ortega, 50, remained hospitalized Saturday from self-inflicted stab wounds, including a deep gash to her throat.

Police said Marina Krim, the Manhattan mother who employed Ortega, returned to her Upper West Side apartment Thursday to find two of her children, ages 2 and 6, dead of knife wounds and the nanny stabbing herself with the blade.

Yoselyn Ortega's motive remains a mystery, even to those who knew her, but a picture of a life in distress has begun to emerge in the days since the killing.

"Apparently over the last month she was not herself," said police department spokesman Paul Browne.

But relatives in Ortega's native Dominican Republic said they were shocked by the allegations.

Miladys Ortega, the nanny's older sister in the Caribbean nation, told The Associated Press on Saturday that her sister "loved those children." She said the family felt the nanny was "unable to do that."

"Yoselyn is fair, loving, loving with those children. She loved them," Ortega said at the family home in Santiago de los Caballeros, about 150 miles north of the capital, Santo Domingo. She spoke as she prepared to attend Mass after visiting the grave of their mother.

She said the Krims had visited the Dominican Republic last February with Yoselyn and stayed at her home in a middle-class district of Santiago.

"Those children were here," Miladys Ortega said tearfully. "They were happy, running, playing."

She said Yoselyn is the youngest of six siblings, most of whom live in the United States. Her sister emigrated to the United States in the early 1980s after graduating from accounting studies at Santa Ana College in Santiago.

Yoselyn Ortega worked as the manager of a print shop in Manhattan, until she separated from the father of her child. She returned to Santiago for a while, but then went back to the U.S., her sister said.

Miladys Ortega said that when her sister got back to New York, she couldn't find an accounting job and decided to work as a nanny because she loves children.

During her last conversations with Yoselyn, her sister didn't say anything that seemed unusual.

"Yoselyn always was a normal person. When she was a child, she played, always played a lot. We would go into the countryside," she said. "As an adult, she dedicated herself to working. She was always working."

Juan Pozo, a 67-year-old car service driver who formerly rented a room from the Ortega family, told The New York Times that the nanny's sister told him Friday that she had "felt like she was losing her mind" lately, and had recently been taken by relatives to visit a psychologist.

Police said they were unaware of any significant history of psychological problems for Ortega, but were investigating whether she had recently sought treatment.

Neighbor Ruben Rivas told reporters she seemed to have suddenly aged in recent weeks and had lost weight. Other friends said that while she was paid well by her domestic employers, Kevin and Marina Krim, and seemed happy with her job, she had suffered a financial setback when she had to give up an apartment she had rented in the Bronx, and recently moved back in with her sister.

William Krim, grandfather to the slain children, told the Times he wasn't aware of any conflicts between the family and the nanny.

"We're just the most stunned people in the world. I mean, they treated this woman so well," he said.

A clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny ? the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species ? for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood ? lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans ? and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life ? the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

Suspected Atlanta gunman was accused of prior shooting: police

ATLANTA (Reuters) - The man accused of gunning down the leader of a prayer service at an Atlanta megachurch on Wednesday was charged 11 years ago with shooting a man outside a mosque in Baltimore, police said on Thursday.

Details of 52-year-old Floyd Palmer's past emerged as police in Georgia searched for a motive and the weapon used in the shooting on Wednesday at World Changers Church International in suburban College Park, Georgia.

Palmer faces murder charges after police said he walked calmly into a chapel on the church property and killed Greg McDowell, a 39-year-old church member and volunteer who was leading a prayer service.

Palmer, a former church maintenance worker who resigned in August for personal reasons, fled in a car, but was arrested late on Wednesday at a North Atlanta shopping mall after a manhunt, authorities said.

The church, one of the largest in the United States, is led by the Reverend Creflo Dollar, a prominent preacher. Dollar was not at the church at the time of the shooting.

As many as 25 people were inside the chapel during the shooting, but no one else was hurt.

Palmer waived a court appearance before a judge on Thursday and remains in jail.

Police searched his apartment and car but did not find a weapon, Fulton County Police Department spokeswoman Corporal Kay Lester said.

"No motive has been determined at this time," she said.

Palmer was previously charged with shooting a man in Baltimore on June 30, 2001, Baltimore police spokesman Jeremy Silbert said.

Silbert said Palmer walked up behind the victim and fired one shot into his lower back.

"Investigators believe that the suspect attempted to continue firing, but the gun jammed," Silbert said.

The shooting occurred outside a mosque, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. According to Maryland court records, a man named Floyd Palmer was charged with attempted murder and found not criminally responsible after pleading guilty to assault.

The newspaper reported that Palmer's former mother-in-law said he served about 18 months in a psychiatric facility after the shooting and that the victim remained paralyzed.

Supercomputer simulates the heart with historic accuracy

11 hrs.

Sequoia, currently?the world's most powerful supercomputer, was built for upkeep of?nuclear weaponry. But researchers have put it to work on a groundbreaking simulation of?something a bit more salutary: the human heart.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, already well-known for work in high-performance computing, has commandeered the Sequoia supercomputer during what is known as its "shakedown period," when it's being set up and tested but isn't quite ready to for its intended purpose. LLNL and other organizations were given time-share access to the computer to do approved non-classified research.

Supercomputing is a competitive field, but for the moment Sequoia is the fastest on Earth: with more than 1.5 million computing cores producing 20 quintillion operations per second, it allows the researchers to simulate the heart at a far greater fidelity than ever before.

LLNL computational scientist Art Mirin describes the project: "Our heart code work has been a great opportunity to demonstrate Sequoia?s power with an application that most people consider important to society, in this case, cardiac modeling." So it's not just about digitizing the heart, but also about humanizing the computer.

The simulations divide the heart into thousands of little digital pieces, each composed of mathematical models that take input from and send data to other pieces. Their interactions require an enormous amount of calculations, even though the model only simulates electrical activity, not physical.

The best that could be done before was to simulate pieces about 0.2mm across, and it could take 45 minutes or so to simulate a single beat. With new software called Cardioid running on the Sequoia supercomputer, not only can they simulate more accurately (the pieces are 0.1mm across, about the size of an actual heart cell), but also hundreds of times faster: now a virtual heartbeat only takes 10 seconds to create.

This huge increase in performance makes many things practical: virtually testing arrhythmia drugs, for instance, or establishing baseline patterns against which real hearts can be compared.?And since heart disease is such a major health risk, especially in the U.S., an accurate electromechanical model of the heart is essential for future research in many other fields.

LLNL researcher David Richards described the potential benefits to Popular Mechanics:

At a very coarse level of resolution, everyone?s heart looks the same.?The details that differentiate individual hearts can be very fine, and our ability to model at extraordinarily high resolution, currently a factor of eight greater than previously, that allows us to capture very fine differences.

The time at Sequoia is running out, and the supercomputer will be running programs for the Stockpile Stewardship program, intended to ensure the country's nuclear warheads remain "safe, secure, and reliable well into the future." The researchers will have to fall back on less-powerful machines ? still far faster than even the fastest desktop, but not quite world-class ? to continue their research. But the powerful Cardioid simulation code will still allow for faster and more accurate simulation than before.

Further developments in the heart-simulation department at LLNL, as well as other applications of supercomputing power, should?appear in their internal Science & Technology publication.

Here comes Hurricane Sandy: Charge 'em if you got 'em

OK, boys and girls on the East Cost. Listen up. Hurricane Sandy's on her way, and she's liable to make a mess of things next week. Just how bad depends on who you're reading, but regardless it's time to start getting ready. Here's how your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad can help.

  • Charge your iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Now. Keep them charged. And once the storm starts, keep them off. You'll likely lose power at some point, and there's a good chance your local cell network will go down for a bit, even with generator backups.
  • Spare batteries. You can't swap batteries in Apple products, but you can get external batteries. If you got 'em, make sure they're charged, too. If you still have time to get some, do it.
  • Car charger. Get one. Get a couple, actually.
  • After the storm, text messages may work best. If the network's up, it's going to be clogged, and calls might not go through. iMessage might not go through. Text messages have a much better chance.
  • If you're worried about damage and don't have a traditional camera, use your phone to take a few pictures of your home and your belongings. It'll make insurance claims much easier, should it come to that.
  • While you still have power and internet access, be it on your phone or broadbad, take advantage of features like instant uploading on Photo Stream, Google+, or Dropbox to make sure those pictures get somewhere that can't be destroyed by the storm. Better to be safe than sorry in that case.
  • If you just have to use Instagram during a storm, don't use a damn filter. Folks wanna see what's happening, and filters don't help that.
  • Use apps like Evernote to help keep track of your emergency supplies.
  • Before the storm, use those gas-finder apps to track down the cheapest petrol. That won't help you with the lines, but it may save you a few bucks.
  • Apps from FEMA and the Red Cross can help you find shelters and other emergency information.

Those are but a few ways your iPhone or iPad can get you through this. Have a tip you'd like to share? Let's hear 'em in the comments! And good luck, everyone. Stay safe.

(AP) ? The steep losses stopped Wednesday as the stock market turned calm, a day after one of its biggest sell-offs of the year. Indexes ended with slight losses after the Federal Reserve said the U.S. economy still needs support.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 25.19 points at 13,077.34, a day after one of its worst drops this year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4.36 points to close at 1,408.75 while the Nasdaq composite index fell 8.76 points to 2,991.70.

"Today we're assessing the damage," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. "Everybody just got clobbered yesterday."

Lower corporate revenue and expectations for the rest of the year drove the Dow down 243 points Tuesday, its third-biggest drop this year. DuPont, 3M, UPS and Xerox all reported lower sales than a year ago.

"It seemed out of the blue, but what we were seeing was stock prices adjusting to corporate profitability," Luschini said.

The market flitted between small gains and losses for much of the day. Indexes started to fade after 2 p.m., after the Fed repeated its assessment that the U.S. economic recovery remains modest at best.

At the end of its latest two-day meeting, the Fed said the economy is still expanding at just a "moderate pace" and that it needs time to see whether a new bond-buying effort launched in September will spur economic growth and new hiring.

Third-quarter earnings reports have mainly disappointed investors. The Dow has risen just one day in the last five, a gain of two points on Monday. It lost 205 on Friday following poor results from Microsoft, General Electric and McDonald's.

The latest batch of earnings reports wasn't as dire, and there was the occasional piece of encouraging news.

Facebook had its best day since its stock market debut in May. The company said late Tuesday that 14 percent of its advertising revenue came from mobile devices, allaying some investor concerns.

The social network's stock soared $3.73 to $23.23, a jump of 19 percent. Facebook has swung widely since its IPO at $38, and has traded as low as $17.55.

AT&T, which is part of the Dow average, said it added the fewest wireless customers since 2003, far behind Verizon Wireless. AT&T's results still managed to beat the estimates of financial analysts. AT&T slid 29 cents to $34.71.

A measure of manufacturing in China, the world's second-largest economy after the United States, improved this month to a three-month high. China's white-hot economic growth has been slowing.

Homebuilder stocks gained after the Commerce Department reported that sales of new homes jumped last month to the highest level in more than two years. Toll Brothers rose 70 cents to $35.25 and D.R. Horton rose 32 cents to $21.41.

A drop in profits for Norfolk Southern hit other railroad stocks. Norfolk Southern reported a 27 percent slump in quarterly earnings late Tuesday, as falling coal prices led to lower revenue. Many utilities have favored using cheap natural gas instead of burning coal this year, pushing down coal prices and weighing on railroad operators.

Norfolk Southern fell $4.92 to $61.09. Union Pacific lost $2.35 to $120.87.

Prices for U.S. government bonds inched lower, sending yields up. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up to 1.79 percent from 1.76 percent late Tuesday.

Among other stocks in the news:

? Netflix dropped $8.10, or 12 percent, to $60.12. Late Tuesday, it slashed its prediction for how many U.S. video-streaming subscribers it would add this year to 4.7 million to 5 million. It had predicted it would add as many as 7 million.

? Dow Chemical rose $1.33 to $29.88. The company announced a wide-ranging restructuring plan late Tuesday that includes cutting 2,400 jobs and closing 20 manufacturing facilities. The company cited slowing economic growth in Europe and elsewhere.

? Tempur-Pedic International sank 20 percent after the maker of memory-foam mattresses reported revenue that was well below the estimates of Wall Street analysts. The company also cut its estimates for full-year profits and revenue. Its stock plunged $6.21 to $25.66.

Stocks waver on a big earnings day

NEW YORK (AP) ? A weak showing in home sales and a mixed batch of earnings reports kept the stock market flipping between minor gains and losses on Wall Street. With an hour left in the trading day, the major market indexes were slightly up.

A strong profit report from Procter & Gamble helped indexes start higher early Thursday, but they weakened in late morning trading after a realtor group said that the pace of contracts for new home sales had leveled off.

That turned the stocks of builders sharply lower. PulteGroup was off 3 percent, giving up an early gain. D.R. Horton fell 2 percent and Toll Brothers fell 3 percent.

In afternoon trading Thursday the Dow Jones industrial average was up five points at 13,082. It had climbed as much as 87 points earlier in the day.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose three points to 1,412 and the Nasdaq gained six points to 2,987.

"This is a market still working through a difficult earnings season," said Jason Pride, the director of investment strategy for Glenmede, a wealth-management firm.

Pride said investors probably celebrated too much after the Federal Reserve pledged more support for the economy in early September. They overlooked shrinking economies in Europe, slower growth in China and other signs that this earnings season would be rough. In the past two weeks, they've paid for it.

"We had a party and now we're dealing with a hangover," he said. "The market is basically back to where it was at the end of August. I don't think that's unreasonable."

The stock market has been in a slump for more than a week because of the weak revenue numbers and lower profit projections that have emerged from the latest round of corporate earnings reports.

The Dow gained 127 points Oct. 16 but since then has managed only two daily gains, both of them meager. The average has lost 474 points since that last significant increase.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition plunged 10 percent after its revenue came in well below what Wall Street analysts were expecting. The company also cut its forecast for full-year earnings and its stocks slumped $6.92 to $62.59.

Profits at United Airlines declined with fewer people flying, and the company fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The stock fell 77 cents to $19.50, a loss of 4 percent.

Homebuilders fell broadly after the pace of growth in home sales slowed last month. PulteGroup, which returned to profitability in the third quarter, gave up an early gain and was trading down 51 cents at $16.94. Toll Brothers fell 93 to $34.32 and D.R. Horton fell 25 cents to $21.16.

Procter & Gamble was the biggest gainer in the Dow after the consumer products company, whose products include Tide, Gillette and Charmin, reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. P&G rose $1.90 to $69.98.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 38 cents to $44.33 after reporting a 2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Apple and Amazon.com report earnings after the market closes.

As investors moved into stocks, they sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.83 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

10 Tips for THE WIFE: Entertaining Adults on Halloween ? Taryn ...

If Rosanna Bowles ran the world, everyone would sit down to dinner each evening and enjoy a healthy meal presented on exquisite dishes. She believes that eating together is truly a giving and loving experience. Her desire to celebrate life ? from the major milestones to the smallest of moments ? is what drives her designs. ?Rosanna Bowles is the founder of Rosanna, Inc., an award-winning international tableware design house with fashion forward designs for the home and table.?Whether it?s a glamorous soiree or simply dining at home, her stylish dishes turn any day into a special occasion. Below she gives a fun twist and ?her top ten tips for celebrating Halloween with Adults? No kids allowed! - Taryn Cox for THE WIFE

1. Dinner Party: Stage an adult dinner party that sets the produce and bounty of the season as the centerpiece of the celebration. Served baked squash, hearty roast chicken with porcini mushrooms, wild rice, and a delicious Amarone (a red wine from Italy).

2. Multicultural: Choose a multicultural theme for your decorations, whether it?s the Mexican Day of the Dead, the Celtic All Hallows Eve, or the Christian All Saints? Day. Infuse your home with the symbols that represent the harvest and the maturity that nature is spilling forth for us all to enjoy.

3. Scary?Movies: For a less formal get-together, invite your friends over on Halloween to watch a classic scary movie and enjoy great finger foods while you greet the trick-or-treaters. The 1963 version of The Haunting is a great psychological thriller, and the 1979 version of Dracula (my favorite) stars Frank Langella as the sexiest Dracula you will ever see!

4. Halloween with your Husband: If you?d like to have a romantic evening at home with the one you love, cook a Halloween-themed meal and serve an equally appropriate Halloween-themed dessert. Watch your favorite horror movies while snuggling under a cozy blanket. Be sure to set Halloween candy outside your front door for trick or treaters to help themselves so your not disturbed.

5.?Scary Music: Choose some classical music to set an eerie atmosphere. The ?Dies Irae? of Mozart?s Requiem is appropriately spooky, as is ?O Fortunata? from Carmina Burana. Bach?s Toccata and Fugue is the perfect mood-setting music if you want to create the feeling of a haunted house.

6. Ambiance: Set your table with black dishes, and make sure there are lots of candlesticks ? preferably black tapes and pillars and small votives to create a Gothic look. For an extra touch string fake cobwebs around center piece decor. Also check with your local florist for dark colored flowers like deep maroon dahlias or black magic roses!

7. Costumes: At least a week before Halloween, scour your closets and local consignment shops for interesting clothes to fashion into a great costume. Read about what?s happening culturally and in the movies. These are good places to start your search for an innovative costume.

8. Treats: A few days before Halloween, bake Halloween-themed treats to offer guests and family on the special day. Doing this a few days in advance is a fun and creative activity that will get everyone in the mood for the big day. Try these Crisp Candy Corn Treats

9. Pumpkins: Carve the pumpkins just before October 31 so they don?t become moldy and collapse ? unless that?s the look you want! Three days is a good window of time to ensure fresh, crisp pumpkins that will hold up through Halloween evening.

10. Bewitching?Cocktails: Lastly, drink a really great blood-red wine like a Barolo or Amarone, as suggested above. There is no better way to enjoy Halloween as an adult. Try this tasty cocktail recipes or pumpkin brews?- Rosanna Bowles for THE WIFE

Myanmar: New clashes between Muslims, Buddhists

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? New clashes between Muslims and Buddhists have broken out in volatile western Myanmar, leaving at least two people dead and more than a thousand homes burned to the ground, authorities said Tuesday.

The information ministry said the violence was continuing and authorities were trying to restore law and order.

The unrest, which began Sunday night, is some of the worst reported between Rohingya Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists since skirmishes swept the region in June, displacing about 70,000 people.

Rakhine state Attorney General Hla Thein said the latest violence began in Minbyar township, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of the state capital, Sittwe. It later spread farther north to Mrauk-U township. Both areas are remote, reachable only by foot, Hla Thein said.

Authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the townships on Monday, Hla Thein said. He said both areas were calm Tuesday, but the Information ministry announced later in the day that the violence was continuing.

Hla Thein said one Buddhist man and two Muslim women died in Sunday's riots, but the ministry put the death toll at two ? a man and a woman. It said 531 houses from six villages in Minbyar and 508 houses in two villages in Mrauk-U had been destroyed in arson attacks.

The unrest comes four months after members of the two religious groups turned on each other across Rakhine state in June after the alleged rape and murder of a Buddhist woman by three Muslim men in late May.

That violence left at least 90 people dead and destroyed more than 3,000 homes and dozens of mosques and monasteries. The two groups are now almost completely segregated in towns such as Sittwe, where the Rakhine are able to roam freely while the Rohingya are mostly confined to a series of camps outside the city center.

The last serious clashes in the state took place in August, when government officials said seven people were killed in the town of Kyauktaw. The United Nations said 600 homes were burned at the time.

The crisis in Myanmar's west goes back decades and is rooted in a dispute over where the region's Muslim inhabitants are from. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated as foreigners ? intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The U.N. estimates their number at 800,000. But the government does not count them as one of the country's 135 ethnic groups, and so ? like Bangladesh ? denies them citizenship. Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a distinct Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

The conflict has proven to be a major challenge for the government of President Thein Sein, which has embarked on democratic reforms since a half century of military rule ended in 2011.

Kingston fitness center focuses on mind, body | Gymrat Fitness

KINGSTON ? A fitness center is going up in a building on Third Avenue that used to house a roller rink.

Registered members were able to start working out at Vive Health and Fitness Center on Monday.

The center includes a gym with cardio and weight machines and free weights, several exercise rooms, a juice bar, saunas, steam rooms, massage therapy and a cycling room. The workout spaces are for members, but massages, staff nutritionists and the juice bar are open to the public.

In the ?functional training studio,? patrons work out on a turf floor using equipment such as kettlebells, medicine balls and suspension ropes.

In a cycling room, more than 40 bikes are lined up facing a screen that can show video footage of real rides, such as the beautiful fall landscape of Acadia National Park in Maine.

Besides the various ways to exercise, the center offers a variety of classes that are free for members, personal training and dieticians. New members get to meet with a trainer and dietician when they join.

?You have to have variety if you want to facilitate a lifestyle change,? said general manager Paul Meshyock. ?The goal is to have a lot of variety so that members can pick and choose what they want to do.?

Owner Diane McAliney said Vive offers a fitness experience not found within 200 miles of the center.

?I felt strongly coming from a medical background that we need to nurture the mind, body and spirit. When we nurture all three, I believe it prevents the body from going into a disease state,? said McAliney, who worked as a sonographer for 18 years. ?I wanted to offer it here because I felt there was a need in the marketplace.?

The center will have its grand opening sometime in late October.

To join, call the center at 570-371-3572 or go to vivehealthandfitness.com to register for a tour of the facility. Tours are by appointment only. The first 200 members to sign up will pay $59 per month for the first year. McAline and Meshyock would not name the price for people who join after the first 200 members.

In addition to the health offerings for anyone interested, Meshyock said the center wants to work with specialized populations, such as someone recovering from an injury or dealing with diabetes.

?Exercise is a form of medicine,? he said.

5 Tips on How to Start Investing in the Stock Market Today

By Kelly Clifford

Many new investors have read up on the theories of stock market investing but are still unsure as to the actual steps involved in the investing process. How to start investing in the stock market is a question faced by many beginner investors. This article offers you some basic steps that you can start with today.

Why are you investing? Ask yourself your reason for stock investment ? is it to get a fixed income every few months? Is it to save up for your retirement? Is it to generate profit over the long term? Is it part of your get rich quick scheme? The latter is called speculating and investors usually do this on a short?term basis; however speculating in the market is not advised for beginner investors. More commonly, investors invest for income (in the form of dividends) or growth (in the form of rising stock prices whose stock can be later sold for a handsome profit).

Figure out how much risk is associated with share market investing and what your risk threshold is. Yes everyone?s is different; yours will depend on many factors including your financial situation, your nature, your psychological needs, etc. There are many different kinds of risks that you must consider before investing in the stock market ? everything from financial risk to interest rate risk to personal risk. Once you have understood each type of risk, you must evaluate how risk?averse you are and then set about minimizing your risk and maximizing your profits in the stock market. Some strategies for minimizing risk are market research, diversification and sound financial management and planning. Once you have covered this, then you can begin to understand how to start investing in the stock market.

Many people start investing by playing it safe with mutual funds. Mutual funds are stock portfolio aggregates compiled by most brokerage and financial firms. They are just that company?s estimation of a fairly ?safe? balance of stocks to hold ? the aim of mutual funds is to provide stable income so they are not too risk?intensive. The theory is that since mutual funds invest in stable stocks in the major markets and stock indexes, then their rate of return closely mirrors those indexes.

Some people start stock investing by going for the hot tips offered by the internet or local brokerage services. This may not be a wise strategy for a beginner investor because it means relying on others to tell you what to buy and sell and when. If you really want to treat stock market investing seriously then you must do all the hard work yourself and start to trust your own instincts. Sometimes just by having your pulse on the market, you can come to insightful conclusions and beat the ?hot tips? guy.

Start by investing small amounts. Most traders refer to the first 6 months as the green period. You should not be making any major investments during this time. Instead you should be closely studying the market, making small investments and tracking and monitoring them continuously so as to be able to gauge developing trends and develop a knack for picking winners.

Stock market investing is not a game, nor is it a gamble. It?s a carefully calculated program, and when used properly can generate a continuous stream of passive income for you. So follow the tips outlined here and learn how to start investing in the stock market today.

Marijuana, Real or Fake, Can Lead to Unusual Gastro ... - Health.com

45024 Marijuana, Real or Fake, Can Lead to Unusual Gastro Problem

MONDAY, Oct. 22 (HealthDay News) ? The regular use of either natural or synthetic marijuana can lead to severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to two sets of new case studies.

This little-known condition, called cannabinoid hyperemesis, is a serious burden to the health care system because doctors often use expensive diagnostic tests and ineffective treatments in an effort to identify the cause of the patient?s symptoms and treat them, the researchers said.

One telltale sign that helps pinpoint these patients: Compulsive hot bathing or showering provides temporary symptom relief.

The case studies were scheduled for presentation Monday at an American College of Gastroenterology meeting in Las Vegas.

?Most health care providers are unaware of the link between marijuana use and these episodes of cyclic nausea and vomiting, so they are not asking about natural or synthetic cannabinoid use when a patient comes to the emergency room or their doctor?s office with these symptoms,? Dr. Ana Maria Crissien-Martinez, of Scripps Green Hospital and Clinic in San Diego, said in an American College of Gastroenterology news release.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis was first described in 2004 in a case series of nine patients in Australia. Since then, 14 case reports and four cases series on the condition have been published.

?Patients who use cannabis ? whether natural or in a synthetic form called ?Spice? ? also don?t realize their unexplained episodes of cyclic nausea and vomiting may be a result of this use, with some increasing their cannabis use because they may think it will help alleviate their symptoms ? and it actually makes them worse,? Crissien-Martinez said. ?The only resolution is cannabis cessation.?

Crissien-Martinez co-authored a case report describing nine patients with cannabinoid hyperemesis treated at Scripps Green Hospital. The patients? average age was 30, and 88 percent of them used marijuana daily. In 80 percent of the patients, their symptoms disappeared when they stopped using marijuana.

Crissien-Martinez and her colleagues also looked at the cost of cannabinoid hyperemesis.

?We estimate $10,000 to be the minimum cost of one admission ? but on average our patients required admission to the hospital 2.8 times, a total of almost $30,000 for workup,? she said.

That price does not include the added costs of primary care physician and/or gastroenterologist visits (2.5 on average) and emergency room visits (six on average).

The other case study may be the first reported case of cannabinoid hyperemesis caused by synthetic marijuana. It involved a 22-year-old man with a 10-month history of symptoms. He has been symptom-free since he stopped using synthetic marijuana.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Turner: Chargers didn't use Stickum in MNF loss

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Coach Norv Turner said nobody from the San Diego Chargers used Stickum in a Monday night loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 15 or in any other game.

He also said it's a towel, not a substance, being investigated by the NFL.

Turner was reacting Monday to an investigation by the NFL into whether the Chargers used a banned sticky substance during a 35-24 loss to Peyton Manning and the Broncos in which San Diego blew a 24-0 halftime lead.

"Nobody in this organization has used Stickum in any game," the beleaguered coach said Monday. "The question involved a towel that has been used by this organization for over 10 years. It's used by a lot of teams in this league. The towel is used to dry the balls, dry the gloves that the players wear and their arms. The league is looking into the towel. That's about where it's at."

He said the towel was brought to the NFL's attention by the Broncos, and that a few years ago, a member of an officiating crew told the team's equipment staff that the towel would be good to dry his golf clubs in rainy weather.

Fox Sports reported Sunday that an equipment manager came onto the field with an illegal substance on hand towels during the Monday night game. Line judge Jeff Bergman saw the towels and tried to confiscate the substance. When the equipment manager wouldn't give it up, the officials made him empty his pockets and found a skin-colored or clear type of tape, Fox Sports reported.

"There was nothing on the towel," Turner said.

Turner declined to reveal the brand name of the towel. Members of the team's equipment staff said only the coach could talk about it.

"I'm not going to get into it. I don't need to help anybody in marketing their product," said Turner, who's come under fire from fans after the Bolts blew double-digit, second-half leads in losses to the New Orleans Saints and then the Broncos. "I understand a lot of golfers use it to dry their grips in inclement weather. It's pretty widely used throughout the league."

Turner said that if the NFL decides that teams shouldn't use the towel, "there's going to be a lot of teams having to change what they use and what they do. ... It's the first time, I believe, it's been brought to their attention. It was brought to their attention, obviously, by Denver, and a lot of the attention that's come out of it the last three-four days came from the same sources.

"It's been asked about in the past," Turner said. "In fact, one of the officials in the past said he thought it would be a good thing for him to use ? this was a couple years ago, according to our equipment guys ? it would be a good thing for him to use to dry his clubs when he's playing golf."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said he couldn't comment other than to say the matter is under review.

If the Chargers are found to have been using an illegal substance, they could be fined or lose a draft pick.

In 1981, the NFL banned the product Stickum and other sticky substances that players put on their hands to improve their grip on the ball. Raiders cornerback Lester Hayes was renowned for using the substance before it was banned.

Safety Eric Weddle, an All-Pro last year, said he doesn't wear gloves and didn't know what was going on.

But when asked about the towels, Weddle said: "It's not like a big secret or anything. All the teams use them, whatever they are. It'll come out."

Weddle said any thoughts that the Chargers cheated were nonsense since they lost.

In Denver, Broncos coach John Fox was asked about the sticky situation.

"You know, I'm not really all over that," he said. "I'm sure the league has their ways of dealing with it and they'll let us know the outcome."

The Chargers (3-3), tied with Denver for the AFC West lead, are coming off their bye weekend and play at Cleveland on Sunday.

Homeland, Season 2

Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison and Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn in Homeland Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison and Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn in Homeland

In Slate?s Homeland TV Club, June Thomas will IM each week with a different partner?policy experts, intelligence researchers, critics, and even Slate commenters. This week she chats with Slate copy editor Miriam Krule.

June Thomas: Miriam, we've got to begin with the I-didn't-see-that-coming final scene. Homeland has a long history of great cliffhangers, but seeing Brody being led away in handcuffs and with a hood on his head leaves me with no idea of what's coming next?and we're only one-third of the way into the season. What do you think of this plot twist?

Miriam Krule: I definitely had that reaction at first, too. I was getting excited for some Wire-style surveillance, but then I remembered that on The Wire they were trying to catch the guy; here they already had him. There wasn?t much about Brody that we viewers didn?t know, so how much surveillance-related drama could there possibly be? In Season 1, it was all about what we didn?t know?Season 2 has to deal with Brody?s true nature so there?s no real suspense in watching him do his thing for an extended period of time. The one thing I will miss about the surveillance room is the strange Carrie-Quinn dynamic.

Thomas: Yes, I feel the same way. It's been a while since we met a new character, so I was looking forward to the Carrie-Quinn sparring?and to hanging out with Virgil and Max. It almost seemed like Carrie was going to investigate Quinn the way she investigated Brody. And I suppose that's not a crazy thought?after all, this season she seems to be really going with her instincts, whether that involves ignoring everyone's instructions not to return to Abbas' apartment in Beirut or blowing up the surveillance by going up to Brody's room.

Why do you think she did it? She said she "saw ... in his eyes" that he was onto her. Do you believe that? I almost thought she was mad at him for bringing up her ECT.

Krule: I thought the scene at the CIA, where she ?bumped into? Brody, was Carrie at her best?she did the most amazing, awkward encounter where she was completely in control. In their second interaction, he had all the power (he was the one that called, after all), and she was just reacting, something we?ve seen she?s not very good at. So her reaction was to try and take the power back. I don?t know what she ?saw ? in his eyes,? but once he called, I had a feeling she would find a way to crack.

Can we back up a second, though? I?m confused about Carrie?s reinstatement. Yes, she was right about Brody, but that?s not why she was kicked out of the CIA. It seems crazy to me that David Estes would a) apologize b) let her back in. Wasn?t the issue that she?s bipolar? Shouldn?t they have realized that she would do something like this?

Thomas: I didn't think she was back in the CIA, but rather that Estes was using her as a non-company asset (same as Virgil and Max) for an off-the-books investigation. It's off-campus, no one at the CIA knows about it ... but Estes was responsible for renting that lovely bit of real estate and for sending over a pile of sweet CIA surveillance equipment and Quinn to "run it."

Not to beat a dead horse with the credibility factor, but ... I didn't buy that. Something that was bound to be as big a deal as a former prisoner of war/current congressman being revealed to be an al-Qaida sleeper couldn't remain a secret. And even if my long-simmering suspicions about Estes were true, and he was sneakily sabotaging the whole thing, why would Saul Berenson be sitting around the room like a broken toy just waiting for something to happen? He goes from being the Beirut station chief to a guy hanging out at an off-the-books operation?

Krule: I was about to bring that up! What happened to Saul? Yes he?s had a lot happen to him?his wife and prot?g? both left him in different ways last season?but after going door-to-door with the Brody video (that was strange and against protocol, surely)?he seems content to just mull about in the background. The more Mandy Patinkin, the better is my philosophy. My only, slight, consolation is Dana, who?s been filling the Sally Draper-sized hole in my heart. I?m usually not a fan of the family side plots, but I?m a sucker for Dana.

Thomas: You're right that there was a ton of interesting family stuff this week, and it began in the very first scene with Kenny Estes (the youngest person in the show) in Darth Vader garb telling Saul (maybe the oldest): "I am your father. Don't make me destroy you." Cue lots of family destruction: Nick Brody moving out of the family home, Estes cheating on the agency, and Saul acting like the impatient dad watching Carrie and Quinn bickering. But we also saw a little bit of bonding between Dana?who, I agree, always brings something to the table?and Finn. They're the next generation, complete with Dana dissing the old, dumb vice president. I have to say, though, kids today have some kinky text habits--she's Sally Hemings to his Thomas Jefferson? That's up there with the uncomfortable racial politics of the surveillance team focusing on "the dark-skinned" people that Brody interacted with. It must?ve been icky for Estes?the only person of color in the room at the time?to hear that, even as he accepts that it made sense. And how strange that Roya Hammad somehow became an honorary white woman. The power of the press!

Krule: One thing we haven?t talked about that?s been bubbling up for a while is how Brody?s former Marine friends have essentially solved what the CIA couldn?t and are the only ones asking any questions. Lauder bangs on Brody?s door (in a manner somewhat reminiscent of Carrie running on the lawn in last season?s finale) and basically demands to talk to Brody/find out what really happened to Tom Walker?only to be talked down by Mike. I couldn?t shake the feeling I had during Season 1?and it?s one of my biggest frustrations with the show?that Homeland seems obsessed with having ?crazy people? be right about everything, and all the ?sane/rational? people preventing them from doing what needs to be done.

Thomas: I know you're a big fan of Hatufim, the Israeli show that Homeland is based on. How would you compare the two shows?

Krule: Yes! I started watching Hatufim when Hulu began streaming it (as Prisoners of War) this summer, when I was anxiously awaiting Season 2 of Homeland. Although the American show is loosely based on the Israeli one, and many of the plot points overlap, where Homeland is full of suspense, Hatufim is full of emotion, for lack of a better word, making them very different shows. This makes sense: After all, Israelis are just celebrating the one-year anniversary of Gilad Shalit?s release, and they have an appetite for storylines about POWs coming home. The U.S. audience needs the added elements of suspense and intrigue. For example, the Carrie Mathison character is not only a minor presence on Hatufim, she is told to pose as one of the POWs? girlfriends (there are two in the Israeli show). Most of the focus is on the families and the internal drama. As a result, the pace of Hatufim is slower, and it focuses more on adapting and is therefore more true to life. When I watch Homeland, I?m usually at the edge of my seat. When I watch Hatufim, I feel emotionally drained?in the best possible way. Oh, and the Israelis were POWs for 17 years, more than double Brody?s absence.

Going back to your first question about what?s going to happen next, I?m most curious to see what they tell family and friends about where Brody is. I can?t imagine they?ll make some big announcement and let the public know. Then the show really would be over. My best guess is that they will try to turn him against Abu Nazir. The Carrie-Brody dynamic has to continue in some capacity, and this seems like the best bet.
